Yes, it is the dachshund...It was totally my fault, because I was more concerned about her attacking my dogs (she did that Wednesday and growls anytime they come near her...totally understandable with the new babies) that by the time I noticed her after the chickens, it was too late. I have forgiven her...I know it is nature and she is just doing what she is supposed to do. I just have to make sure that my chicks are up when I let her out. And I forgive her each time I see those cute little baby faces!!! :) Still trying to figure out who is the baby daddy (LOL) but from the looks of the pups...boxer ish?? If so, I will say they are Doxers....haha..
I would suggest you put her in a room that is separate from the other dogs and just leave her in with her pups. She's had a lot of changes--new home with strange dogs immediately before whelping. Some mama dogs are really ferocious protecting their pups, some not so. With all the recent changes, she will be much more protective than she would normally be.

At this age, you can't tell a lot about who the father is--or fathers since there could be six fathers. They look like new-born puppies from a breed that is not a snub-nosed breed. They could have a long coat like a Collie. I would assume the father is not a very big dog since she would have been really badly injured or possibly killed if it were a tall dog. If you want the details, PM me and I'll explain. Are they all brown? If so, the father is brown or yellow. The black and tan of the mother is recessive to a red color. Didn't the shelter have any idea of who the father was?

I'm not clear on the piebald gene, never breeding piebalds. Some Dachshund breeders were breeding piebalds and I believe it is recessive, so it is possible the mother is carrying piebald, although I don't think the standard (large) Dachshund breeders bred for piebald. I know the mini people did.

The next week or so is the most critical for these pups. Chilling is their biggest risk. Their eyes should open around 10 to 12 days, something like that.

jajeanpierre - Thanks for the info! I will probably be messaging you later if I have any questions. I know this is a chicken forum so I will try to keep my dachshund problem posts to a minimum!

Trying to get back into a normal routine is killing me...I had a knee scope done 3 weeks ago and had some complications. I am not going back to work until almost the end of October. I work night shift and I am so not a day person...becoming one slowly that is for sure!

We need some rain up here in the DFW area!!!! Although this is the first weekend for the State Fair so not sure everyone wants rain yet.

Need some good ideas for a new flock! As of now we have a mixed flock of layers and I have my games and longtails. I want to surprise raine06(DW) with some new layers come spring... Had trouble with mortality rate this year! We had hatched almost 100chicks from our own eggs we bred and then I ordered about 50 more from ideal! We only have 4 that made it and those are keepers for sure! But I want something that will be a good dp breed for her. She has said she wants workings but every time I try to.buy some she says no... Who's got some suggestions????

Winter must be close. Keep running into snakes. Found this one while taking an evening stroll with my wife. Now this is a Rattlesnake. This is called a Coon Tailed Rattler.
What a beautiful snake! Glad you found it, and you should keep it over at your house. The Guineas are a might hard on them here (thank goodness they know their job well). You have been keeping our spirits up with your gorgeous pictures. We love the JG here, where did you get yours?

Once, a friend of mine (in Mexia) caught a coon. He called me over for curry dinner the next day. It's not the best curry; but it's the best we could do for the chicken.
Haven't had it in a looong time. I remember it to be pretty greasy, but I lived in Ohio then. Down here they probably won't be as fat.
