I know some breeders that will not bring their birds home after a show because they are afraid of bringing home a disease that will infect their whole flock.

If this is true, then what the heck is the point of it all? Why spend that time and effort in a bird just to show it off, then discard it afterwards. That makes absolutely NO sense to me. Isn't the bird you take to a show supposed to be the best specimen you have on hand? Why discard it instead of breeding it and duplicating the genetics? I don't get it...

I would think they put them in quarantine when they bring them home :old

Don't you just love your SS-mine is the friendliest, sweetest girl :)

I know but its actually raining (yes the r word haha) and I am not running my butt out to the shop in my drawers to take one. I might wind up with a black eye and skinned knees that way.

I only use cast iron. Everything tastes better that way! Most of mine were my granny's but recently I saved a couple from the thrift store here in town and fixed em up (scrubbed off the rust and cured em again). Good as new. And 5 bucks for one is a great price!!
Good idea, I should check out the thrift stores! $5 is a GREAT price!

I love her.  She's hands down my flock favorite. Which is saying ALOT since I LOVE my rooster and my blue egg layers! LOL. I got her from Melissa.  All my birds from Melissa had absolutely awesome personalities.

We got hatching eggs from a local breeder-she was the only one that hatched & made it, so we got a Welsummer & Orpington chick the same age from Melissa so she would have buddies to grow up with :)

Does anyone use cast iron for cooking? I bought a dutch oven a few years back, started using it recently. It is super heavy but I LOVE cooking with it. So I just bought a 12, 10, 8 & 6.5 inch. Can't wait to start using them. Hoping to get rid of all my "no stick" pans and just use these.

I have an old skillet and some other assorted things - think a griddle and a corn bread pan. Haven't used them in years but going to try new way for seasoning them that I read about that sounded like it might do a better job than I've done in the past - it requires multiple oilings and bakings to get a good finish on it. And finally bought a dutch oven recently. Like you, I'm wanting to use the cast iron and throw out the no-stick skillets we have.

So I went out and checked on my chickee doodle and she doesn't "seem" sick. I don't know. I hope she is ok.
