Texas

It poured all night here. Went out to the shop to check on the chicks and almost busted my butt in the mud. Still have yet to go feed the big birds; they like to make a sloppy mess when it rains and I am not looking forward to it. They are like pigs in poop when it rains.....

GOOD MORNING FELLOW TEXANS!!

Congratulations to those who got the rain yesterday. We are still waiting...... God has been putting on a light show all night. Really neat to watch.

Lisa :)

Wow! No rain? I thought for sure you would get rain. I was out of town Fri and Sat up in Lubbock for my Grandmother's 90th birthday. I was going to stay, but had to come home because of the rain (always seems to rain when I am out of town). Sure enough, my auto feeders were clogged (because of rain and high winds) in my Cooper Maran and JG pens. My rain gauge is showing 2 3/8". Praise God for he rain!

That is the method I use. It works the best with very thin coatings of flaxseed oil. You'll be amazed at how quickly you get a slick, black finish. I do find that I still have to store my cast iron with a thin coast of fresh oil despite this seasoning method, though.

Yep - that's what I read about and plan to try - method calls for multiple thin, thin coatings of flaxseed oil baked at high heat after each coating. Glad to hear that you have seen this nice coating as well with the flaxseed oil.

For those of you that use cast iron. The only problem I have ever had with using cast iron is other people that don't understand how it works. You get your pan just they way you want it and some helpful person comes along an scrubs it with Dawn (aarrggg!). Because this has happened so many times, I have found a quick way to season my pans, especially my frying pan which I use every day and about 95% of the time. Let's say I want to fry an egg and I find my frying pan freshly washed. I just take some high temp oil, like peanut oil and wipe the inside with it and heat on the burner until it starts smoking. Then I let it cool off for a few minutes before cooking. Voilà! Teflon has no chance. This also work with stainless.

I don't think my little brahma is going to make it. She hasn't moved all night. When I went to pick her up, she didn't fight me, she was a little cool, so I put her in a container with some shavings and put the heat lamp on her...she won't eat (she would be the one in the middle of the FF pan and have feed all in her pretty feathered feet). I am so sad...I am tempted to just give up on chickens. Something has happened to all of my chicks at around this age.

Sorry about the depressing post..I am feeling kinda blah after seeing her this morning.

Went down to the neighbor's I used to talk to and found out he messed up so his sis gave me his birds! I now have 2 more hens and 4 more cockrels! They look to be game, guess I'm having lots of stew! I have to get them back in good health first. They have only been fed bread! The lady didn't know where he kept the food... They are all very skittish and flip out when I have tried to feed and water them!

So sorry. Lost a chick myself last night to the cold rain (I was out of town). Sounds like it could be Merritts disease if all your chicks are dying in the same way around the same age. Did you have them vaccinated?
