Texas

Good luck Heidi. I had 2 nests that supposed to hatch last week but none came out because there was no eggs left. The rats ate all of them. I declared a war with those rats now. For chicks hatch at this time, 6 weeks from now their moms will leave them, and leave them behind when cold winter comes ..... make sure your heat lamp is ready.
oh I know....I knew when I impulsively purchased more eggs I'd be sorry they would be in the house all winter! I'm the mama for these hatchlings! oh well!! they are precious!

I am still in the learning stage - no chicks yet - heck not even a coop yet - but determined to have it all together for spring.
I'm on the coast so winters are rally mild - but I too have been hearing this winter is going to be a cold one - hum
The coop I'm planning on will have storage/my side and the coop/chicken side - I 'm thinking a heat lamp on my side, I'm sure I
cant take the cold - maybe they wont mind a little warmth seeping over to their side, but I'm happy to learn they are so hardy. I probably
would have warmed them up to my comfort zone.
People like to think that the chickens need the same temperate conditions that we do for comfort. Problem is that when you "baby" them too much, it leaves them prone to having problems when temps CAN'T be regulated. Like people who put air conditioners in coops for chickens. That's great, but what happens when we have the rolling brownouts in the summer because it's so hot and the state power grid can't handle the load? Or when we have a bad storm and electricity is knocked out? People who get their chickens accustomed to air conditioned air wind up with chickens that start getting severely heat stressed when it is relatively cool - like 80 degrees - and then if the AC isn't there, those birds are keeling over. Same thing in winter with heat lamps. It's one thing to provide heat to young chicks, but quite another to provide heat to teenage/adult chickens unless it is -50 degrees outside and you don't have enough chickens that can sleep close together and pool their warmth.

Think about it - chickens have been alive for a VERY long time. There was no electricity to run heat/air conditioning or even fans. Those chickens were hardy things. They had to be or they didn't survive. Heck, many chickens didn't even get coops, they were left to fly into trees at night for protection. And yet in the 21st century we still have chickens. If all the niceties were really necessary for raising healthy chickens - chickens would have died out thousands of years ago.

We went to Hogeye Festival today. It was nice because we got there early and the crowds were not too bad. Endured walking through the "car show" with my husband. ugh. He loves it, though. When I first met him in 1979 he had just bought a new Trans Am...we still have it.

If anyone is bored today the Hogeye goes on until 6:00p, I think. Lots of festival food and the prices are not as high as Austin. The festival is free to get in. Just find yourself to the middle of downtown Elgin!

We are back home now. yea!

I am the kind of person who LOVES to stay at home. I enjoy going out to dinner, too, but as far as shopping??? Unless it is a thrift store I am soooo not interested. Thrift stores are like treasure hunts!

Give me animals and gardens over crowds of people any day! :D

You just described me.

I have noticed over the past month or so, several people who used to be regulars are now mysteriously missing. In their place others have come to the forefront of posting activity. Perhaps that is just ebb and flow, perhaps not. But if we all stick to chickens in Texas to guide our discussions then I think that we should be okay with our posts.

Good Morning Fellow Texans!!

Looks like rain today! I saw where S. Harris County was under severe thunderstorm warnings earlier this morning. Stay dry and enjoy the rain!

Lisa :)

Morning! We got hammered here. I was totally not ready. Moving on through now. :)

I agree.

We all originally came to the site for "chicken only" information but the breakaway groups have a much broader range of topics and I appreciate that. If I want to ask someone specifically about plants and gardening I am happy that there are people on this board and in my area who are gracious with their information.

There are conversations all over this board that are not chicken related.

There is room for everyone. Take what you find is useful and leave the rest.

Soccer got rained out today .. as expected. Noting to do so.. I will eat some instant noodle, back to bed. Then at noon, go to my ranch and continue to finish the new cage. Still. i see no news on the delayed UT-TCU game last night.
