Thanks! Part of the problem was that I didn't want to walk the 5 yards in the pouring cats and dogs rain the let them out!! We have a trampoline that they have discovered as a great place to hang out under.

Here's some Texas chicken related content for you:

At what age do y'all put your chicks in the coop for good? I live in Conroe, and we've had lows in the 50s at night. My chicks will be four weeks old on Wednesday, and I was thinking of putting them out next weekend, with no supplemental heat. They have most of their feathers; some have started feathering out on their heads already. There's 24 of them, so plenty of snuggle buddies. Their heat lamp is on a dimmer, and has been on the lowest setting possible (besides "off") for several days.

Do you think they'll be okay? I REALLY don't want to put a heat lamp out in the coop...

I use heat if it's going to be below 32, until they are good and fat. I cut off heat about 4 months last winter.

We all originally came to the site for "chicken only" information but the breakaway groups have a much broader range of topics and I appreciate that. If I want to ask someone specifically about plants and gardening I am happy that there are people on this board and in my area who are gracious with their information.

There are conversations all over this board that are not chicken related.

There is room for everyone. Take what you find is useful and leave the rest.

As a newcomer to Texas, I am really thankful for the plant and gardening help I've received on this forum.

What large fowl white egg layers are good for Texas? I want to free range them. One of my Polish pullets gave me a few dozen eggs before stopping three weeks ago. One gave me maybe two and another might have given me one egg. The fourth Polish has yet to give me any eggs (all are 7.5 months old). I need some white in my egg basket.
