Yesterday I went to the ranch to complete my cage. I was also waiting for a friend named Joe to come visit me and get some chicken. Joe did not show up as usual. Late evening, I was about to call him and chew him out for no-show. But I hold off as Joe always did that to me and I would see him on Monday at work. I planned to come to see him and tell all our co-workers of how reliable Joe is .... for a good laugh as we are best friends.

Well, this morning I came to his dept .. just to find out Joe had an auto accident Sat night and died.

3 mos ago when Joe heard about my engagement in Vietnam, he asked me to help connecting him with a lady overthere. I talked with him about getting his picture to a few ladies there .. but we never had a chance to take picture. Well, it's too late for me to make his life a little more romantic.

Joe ... may you rest in peace and go to heaven where you will find happiness.

Sitting in traffic on my way to tutor. Trying to figure out why I'm sitting in traffic. Oh yea. Just remembered the highway is shut down

I got stuck in that going to Katy Saturday. it added and extra hour to our drive and was HORRID.

Good job!    I think that is called an "open air" coop, right?

I have an open air coop, too! They certainly are great for hotter climates and they tend to last longer throughout hurricane season because they air out faster when there is moisture. What I want to do, however, is put up some tarp for when it does rain so there is more protection from one of the sides. That is gonna take a little money, though.

My friend here in Southeast TX has an open air coop. She said it's like a big bird cage - just open wire fencing and a roof and some nest boxes - and it works great during hurricane season and keeps the birds cooler in our fabulously hot and humid weather.

I built the coops for air flow in summer. I will wrap some nylon sheets in the back to protect from the north cold wind in winter. This new cage was designed so the morning sun is in the back. The doors face south as this will be open in winter. I monitored and saw that there always be shades inside the coop, even the worse hours of 3-5pm. This cage is also used as wind barrier and shades for the little coops in front of it. (This idea came to me when I could not wait 5-7 years for a shade tree).

I still search for news about my amigo Joe but found nothing in the Net yet. Don't know why ! The accident was in San Marcos, TX.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your friend. I imagine that you now feel guilty for the negative thoughts you had about Joe's unreliability. Joe, may you RIP.

At what age do y'all put your chicks in the coop for good? I live in Conroe, and we've had lows in the 50s at night. My chicks will be four weeks old on Wednesday, and I was thinking of putting them out next weekend, with no supplemental heat. They have most of their feathers; some have started feathering out on their heads already. There's 24 of them, so plenty of snuggle buddies. Their heat lamp is on a dimmer, and has been on the lowest setting possible (besides "off") for several days.

Do you think they'll be okay? I REALLY don't want to put a heat lamp out in the coop...

Well I let my middle chicks into the big girl coop when they were around four weeks old. No supplemental heat. They are eight weeks old now. Still having trouble getting to them into the coop at night. Last night they roosted on the water line going into the brooder. six eight week old chicks on a 3/4 pvc pipe. I just shake my head. Silly things roost in the coop during the day. I think they do this to keep away from the bigger hens.
