I was thinking I was gonna need to replace my repurposed wooden mop handle for the new kids coming....but if the can hang on PVC the can hang on that :). Greatest pic of "roosting chickens"I've found....and I've been looking!

Yeah I don't think it will be so as soon as my daughter finishes with state marching contests monday my next days off will be designing reinforcements. We have two coops. The first is the big girl and guy coop. The second is not open to the run yet as it is being used as a brooder for your youngest - 4 week old chicks. It is the same "brooder the middle chicks came from originally. So I don't know if is their attachment to that coop that keeps them close by or their fear of the big girls. They learned quickly to stay away from the big girls and they don't seem to be getting picked on (since they stay out of the line of fire so to speak.)

Sorry for the rambling, my kids had my attention in the middle there. Anyway, I figure if they get cold enough they will move into one of the coops eventually. In a couple of weeks I plan to open the second coop to let the youngest ones to integrate. We will see what happens then.

I have three age sets of chickens too: THREE months, FIVE months and FIVE years.

My 18 three month olds are not yet in the "big coop" they are still in the hoop coop. It's kinda small for them during the day, but it's fine for sleeping. So far no loss of feathers on their backs so I guess they aren't too crowded plus they do get out to run around for about three hours a day.

I have been letting the 3 month olds get acquainted with the four 5 month old BC's and the 12 old big chickens before moving them into the larger coop. They all seem okay. I did notice that big chickens picking on the five month olds....if they get too rough they get a "peck" from my bamboo stick.

...that reminds me that I need to start stacking the kindling under my husband's butt to get the new coop spec'd out.

I built the coops for air flow in summer. I will wrap some nylon sheets in the back to protect from the north cold wind in winter. This new cage was designed so the morning sun is in the back. The doors face south as this will be open in winter. I monitored and saw that there always be shades inside the coop, even the worse hours of 3-5pm. This cage is also used as wind barrier and shades for the little coops in front of it. (This idea came to me when I could not wait 5-7 years for a shade tree).

I still search for news about my amigo Joe but found nothing in the Net yet. Don't know why ! The accident was in San Marcos, TX.

Sorry about your friend, may he rest in peace

Well, this sure was a worrisome article.

Homeowner Shot Men Pretending to Purchase Roosters

I guess I'll have to find a safer way of selling my roosters. I'm so glad the homeowner was safe, though and managed to protect himself. It can't have been easy to shoot someone, but so long as he and his family is safe, I think he may sleep better tonight.

Now to find a safer way to sell my roosters for meat or flock protection. I don't think I'll sell any in the Buy~Sell~Trade section, especially considering how many awesome birds there are on there. I only have two EEs, one Black Australorp, and a bunch of cute little mutts. I don't think mine stand a chance compared to the others, especially if I want to make a decent amount to cover some feed costs. I might just end up processing them.

Also, I don't think there are many people from the Rio Grande Valley on BYC. I haven't found any permanent residents on the site, which really sucks. I want chicken-keeping neighbors!

Yesterday I went to the ranch to complete my cage. I was also waiting for a friend named Joe to come visit me and get some chicken. Joe did not show up as usual. Late evening, I was about to call him and chew him out for no-show. But I hold off as Joe always did that to me and I would see him on Monday at work. I planned to come to see him and tell all our co-workers of how reliable Joe is .... for a good laugh as we are best friends.

Well, this morning I came to his dept .. just to find out Joe had an auto accident Sat night and died.

3 mos ago when Joe heard about my engagement in Vietnam, he asked me to help connecting him with a lady overthere. I talked with him about getting his picture to a few ladies there .. but we never had a chance to take picture. Well, it's too late for me to make his life a little more romantic.

Joe ... may you rest in peace and go to heaven where you will find happiness.

So sorry to hear that you lost your dear friend. Our prayers go out to his friends and family, may they find comfort in his passing to the arms of the Father.

There is nothing similar to this situation and you trying to sell some chickens. The homeowner was involved in cock fighting. One of the victims and the homeowner had extensive criminal records. This is not a farmer selling a few chickens.

That being said, I agree we should all be very careful selling things from our homes. Someone suggested to me that I meet in a very public place like a parking lot of a big, busy store. That's easy for selling chickens, not so easy when trying to sell over 400 pounds of stainless-steel parrot cage that I want to sell.

Do I want someone who has an interest in parrots coming onto my property to see that my big parrots are outside 24/7 in big aviaries that bolt cutters could open? Adult parrots are worth nothing, really, but most people think they are because they sell for thousands in a pet shop.

I had a wonderful chicken day yesterday!!!! Drove to visit chicken friend Zootopia and met Junglexporer. Fantastic people and great educational and highly entertaining conversation. Brought back a few of Zootopia's fluffies to overwinter while she is indisposed fighting crutches after her foot surgery. Feel honored and blessed to be trusted to care for some genetics she loves. Jungle explorer is the real deal. He is exactly as his posts present him to be. I can't wait for our next time to get to visit. Not to even mention what beautiful birds he has.

How nice to have an actual F2F visit, and that you are able to help Zootopia with chicken care while she convalesces.
