I know there are some horsey people here and I wanted to share my photo of our 36 year old horse, Black. We were told he was a cutting horse and he was very light in the rein. He used to be coal black, now his face is more gray than black. He is a good boy and we don't mind him being a retired hay burner.

He looks good for that age, my childhood horse that we foaled & I grew up riding made it to 32. We have an 18 yr. old retired racehorse right now that will be with us forever.

LOTS of talk today!!!

Thank you for making fun of my cow.  I get to pass your pokes on down to my husband which is a LOT of fun for me. 

I have plans for this cow, babies, milking, petting.  My husband has plans too....plans to turn it into BBQ if it sits on my little Mazda3 (NOT a COWasaki, Hung!!  .    I'll probably end up calling the Sheriff's Office Estray guys to come out and pick her up.

Did everyone who is getting a hard freeze get their garden's picked?  I picked about 30 POUNDS of green/red/purple bell peppers and Serrano peppers!   That was just off of four plants, too.  Thank God they freeze so well.

Ms. JellyBean - Thank you for that recipe!  It looks really good.  I like to cook, just hate to clean. 

Cheddar Pie Crust (great for pot pies or apple pies)

2 1/2 cups unbleached flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup chilled Crisco
6 tbsp. chilled unsalted butter
6 oz extra sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1/3 cup (may be more) ice water

Mix as you would any other pie crust recipe.



COW UPDATE:  I went out to lure the cow back out to the pasture with some feed...she decides to stick her head through our board horse fence....my husband comes out to yell...cow breaks fence board....husband yells louder.

I wish a cow would show up at our house & no one claimed it Tuesday night we lucked out, it only got 35* but we were out in the garden at 11pm last night picking everything-the frost was already settling The garden was toast this morning 31* here. We had a lot of bell peppers, tomatoes, serranos, & a ton of poblanos we picked in the dark. That recipes shows like my kind of food. I know how your husband must feel-we had a horse come in to board for a week-1st thing she did was kick & break 6 stall boards so she spent the next 5 days in the round pen.

1. I need to put more heat lamps. So where can I find the Red Heat bulb. So far I went to Home Depot and Lowe just to get the clamped light fixture. All the bulbs I saw was Yellow.


2. Also, every winter 1-2 of my grown birds get sick and paralized their legs. Long ago, I though this was trace of Marek. But now I know this only happens in winter, maybe early winter. Does anyone know which sickness is this and how to deal with it. Currently 1 one-year bird has 1 leg coupled a few days ago

Do you have a tractor supply? I've seen them there.

Yep, and with me riding him! I have wanted a horse since I was a little girl. This is Red Coyote as a 1 yr old. Almost ready to go to training for racing. This is him kissing me. We had an instant special bond that summer. I only saw him about 3 times at Valor Farm and haven't seen him since. I check on his racing stats every now and then. I really wanted him. Still do. He is an incredible horse. Kind of funny side note. I named him Red so I could call him something when I was there. The farm had not named him yet. On my last visit before he was shipped off to train I was talking with the farm manager and told me they had named him Red Coyote. I said that is funny, because I named him Red. Ken thought that was funny too. I need to go there this spring....

My original coop is an 8x8 room with a wood floor that has laminate tiles on it. The first year, I was cleaning it out once a week. Then, I started doing deep litter and fermented feed. The FF made the feces not smell very much and it was much easier to just let it decompose. Since it was fall, I added a bag or two of fallen leaves. Every 3-4 weeks, I'll go in there with a manure fork and stir it all up. I rarely smell anything but a slight musty smell and there's no longer tons of little poops sitting all over the ground. I don't think I've added anything - shavings, leaves, dirt - in at least 9-10 months now. This summer, I added 30 chicks, so I took over the stall that the coop was attached to (12x12). It already had a dirt floor with shavings and I've just never cleaned or anything in there since the chicks moved in. I'll see some poops when they first drop them, but they disappear pretty quickly in the dirt floor. Again, no real smells to deal with here. I really like the set up as it's REALLY decreased my work load in the barn. Plus, with the hens roaming the barn most of the day, they've almost eliminated my need to pick stalls often as well, since they destroy any manure piles they come across. I'm only doing stalls when the shavings have turned to dust, so about once every other month or so.

As for the protected run, which is 15 x 25, it's on dirt and several times a year, we'll thrown in huge piles of mowed grass or leaves for the hens to pick through. I've never had an issue with any of them with the mowed grass. They don't eat much of it anyway, it just gets spread out where it decomposes. They love to attack the piles, but once they've been spread out, the girls head back out to their daily duties - wandering all the horse pens and barn for insectoid treats. I only feed in the morning and they tend to have hugely full crops in the evenings, so they're getting plenty of bugs and stuff to eat throughout the day.

My low was 28, and that wasn't even the low spot on the property where the garden is.... We covered what we could and I haven't had the heart to see what didn't make it. I closed my eyes when I pulled off the covers.

His first two races he didn't start so they sent him back to school. lol! I really wanted him at that point. He has done well ever since then. Dang I wish he was mine.

Next question. A friend told me that they their friend thought bantam eggs were better tasting (no idea why) which got me thinking about those cute little bantam hens. All the chickens I want come in bantam size. So, which is better to keep in a big fenced yard? Are bantams more likely to fly? If that is the case I will stick with large fowl. I have big trees all around me with hawks, owls and falcons. I don't want to lose a bird. Bantams lay a more medium sized egg for the most part, right?

Thanks Jelly and Orp, I just bought 2 Red Heat Lamp from PetSmart. I work right across from them and never think that this will be the place. Next I will return for some Betta fish. I normally bought my fish in Spring... just to see them die when the room turns too cold. Maybe it is time to heat up everything in the house with Red bulbs ... so I can sleep better in winter too.

My betta has a 4 gallon planted ADA tank with a tiny heater. He stays nice and warm year round.
