I love my SS. Favorite hen in my flock. Only hen that isn't ever for sale, even though she doesn't lay blue eggs. I love my EEs, just for their eggs, but I can't wait for my Marans to start laying, and I need to get my hands on some Welsummers. I also have a barred rock that I enjoy, she's fun to watch and listen too. She's a constant talker. My favorite hen to look at is my show stock SLW. Though she doesn't lay blue eggs

. Silly wyandottes. All chickens need to lay blue eggs lol
Is your Wyandotte cranky and mean? I was told they tend to be that way as a breed. I really like the look of the GLW. So pretty!

I am one to like things that look different from the 'norm'. Must be the artistic side of me. I had a smooth coated Border Collie with a brown eye and a blue eye. She was a great dog, not as great as my GSD though. I waited 20 years to get a solid black GSD. She was well worth the wait. My next one is going to be a sable. Way cool looking dog!

I hope to have a small farm someday where I can have more chickens, goats and horses. Need that rich, single guy. :)

Does your orp eat a lot of feed? I was told they tend to eat more than other chickens and aren't very economical that way. I do like the Jubilee Orps though. :)

My local feed store orders sexed (females) in "all the popular breeds". They said they are hens 90% of the time. Not sure what is popular here so I will be going there early next year to find out and get supplies and such. If that won't work for me, My Pet Chicken sells individual chicks and as long as I order 4 chicks total (or more) I can get individual breeds. I found another breeder tonight out NE somewhere that sells single breeds as long as you meet the minimum order. Not sure what theirs was though. May have been 6.

I've read some breeds go broody more than others. I am trying to stay away from the ones that are know for their broodiness. I have looked at multiple sites and they may not agree on everything but a chicken known for going broody seems to be the same on all the sites. If I end up with a broody hen I can always get some eggs from a friend for her to hatch. That would be fun. :) Not ready for that yet though!

Broodiness has been pretty successfully bred out of egg laying breeds. Birds that were broody were culled, and since broodiness--the instinct to set and hatch eggs--has a genetic component, it was rather successfully bred out of egg-laying breeds.

It is more common in breeds like Silkies and the Game breeds. There are things that can be done to get a broody hen to stop being broody. I have a couple of little Silkies that are broody yet they lay three to five eggs a week. I just worry that they are not eating and drinking often enough and are dropping a bit of weight.

Feed store chicks will likely come from one of the large hatcheries. They may not approach the breed standard. Your feed store might order you the breeds you are interested in

My Australorps are very broody. One in particular will sit on a nest for most of the summer. I have another one that goes broody but gets bored after about a month. I also have an EEr who will go broody but if I mess with her enough she gets frustrated and gives up after a week.

Is your goal a pretty egg basket or production?

I have breeds that will give me all egg colors. I won't know if I have an olive egg layer until Spring. I do have one now that lays a very green egg, like in my avatar...actually, that IS her egg. White eggs are boring BUT like with any other work of fine art, the white egg allows your eye to "rest" when viewing all of the pretty colors in your egg carton.

What? Over-thinking it, am I....? :D

Good Morning Texans,
I was up at 4am, chatting with my wife in Nhatrang, VN. Another hurricane hit her town 12 hrs ago. This time the eye went directly to her town. It's a smaller hurricane with lighter wind as compared to Haiyan, still lots of rain. It rained all night (our Thurs morning). And again this day (her Fri) is her turn to cover 2 shift (8am-10pm). Hopefully all rains are gone by the time she leaves work.

My chicken partner did not report any bad news yesterday so I hope all the young chicks are ok. I am glad it's Fri so I can come take care of them tonight and more time on Sat and Sun.

Be ready to enjoy Fri. Drive careful around Austin as there is a big car race event and cops are everywhere. Tammy.. slow down pleeze... don't drive 290mph on hwy 290...that's not the speed limit.

Hung- I do not drive on or at 290!!! I won't even drive 85 on 130 and that is the speed limit. :D. I only go into austin when I have to.

A few years ago I used the sample version of the Rosetta Stone language trainer. I learn in Vietnamese the word for cat kind of sounds like "meow", dog sounds like "chow" and ball sounds like "baan". Does this sound correct? Maybe my memory is not very good.

I have been raising game for about 5 years, and oh boy do they go broody, they do it every chance they get, i have several that will chase me and/or my dogs, one of my dogs actually had a cut after getting too close.
Needles to say i will be using that hen to raise the eggs im buying in the spring.

I don't think you are over thinking at all. :)

I want a pretty egg basket and good production. Too much to ask?

Is your avatar all your own eggs? What breeds do you have?

I need to go through my list and see what the colors I have there. I think they are mostly browns and creams. Maybe a white. It's a good thing I am doing all this planning and learning now. I may need to increase the size of my coop!

I will find out where they get the chicks from and ask about them ordering for me. I don't plan to show or breed so not exactly meeting the breed standard isn't that important as long as the chicks come from healthy stock and are healthy birds.

Is My Pet Chicken a good place to order from?

I heard about Rosetta but didn't know how it works. Your memory is excellent so you must stay very young, my guess. Yes, Cat=Mèo, Dog=Chó, and Ball=Banh. One of my sister names Tâm, so she picked her US name as Tammy.

I drive TX130 daily (Pflugerville-San Marcos) and the first year I did collect so many tickets. One time, I almost tried the trick of playing a dumb chinese and asked the man in blue if 130 was the speed limit. I stopped in time since the man looked so mean.

Maybe this weekend, I can try 130 and tell the man in blue that I am one of the NASCAR driver and he can have my autograph or take picture with me if he can smile.
