I am furious right now!

I seem to have a predator I can't even identify. About 3-4 weeks ago i lost all 3 of the 5 week old EE chicks I had picked up from the local feed store. The wire cage they were in had only a 1 1/2 in gap at the top of the door, but all three were just gone when I went to feed them in the morning. Oh yeah, the door was still closed...
Last week I woke up to find 3 of my chickens missing. The new Polish Rooster, Along with Big Baby and Freckles, 2 of my EE chickens. They were just gone, with no trace of a fight or anything. No piles of feather, or pieces anywhere. The next day Freckles was back

I don't know how, but I'm glad. The other two have not made it back.
Well it gets worse. This morning I went to feed everyone, and my GCMARAN chicks wire cage, that is inside the coop had 1 missing little Roo, and the other Roo and pullet are dead!

No bite marks, or missing feathers, to indicate what killed them.
They had reached a good sz. I thought they were safe. It was a warm night. But something got a 6-7 week old Roo through a wire cage where the biggest gap was at the top of the door. Maybe 1 1/2 in.
I just don't get it....

I have good news! Last week I found out a strange bird in my flock is a EE Rooster. Legs is almost 37 weeks old, And we heard him crow for the first time about an hour ago

now i just need to see that he's covering the girls.

he's gorgeous...I so love the baby crowing...well I love the big boy crowing too!!

He just started to crow, so leave the boy another 2 mos. Let's hope that we don't have to teach him.

Lol, exactly! The first sound I wasn't even sure was a crow, but the 2nd was more clear. Did still sound like he had a sore throat though!

What is the average age that a cock starts to crow and mate? I've never had a Roo before, so I'm not sure. The 7 week old GCMARAN's I had were already showing a more pronounced comb. Legs showed no clear signs of boyhood until 25 weeks. He'll be 27 weeks on Wed.

I really like Ideal. My last two orders have been with them.

I can't order from them. I am only getting 5 chicks and they have to be hens in order for me to keep them. From what I saw on the sight, they don't sex the chicks they sell. My Pet Chicken will sell sexed chicks....

I'm going to talk with the feed store this week about the hatchery. Maybe it is a different one.

I just don't get it....

Two things comes to mind. 1 you can nail a 1x4 that will cover the gap. 2 If you want to find out what it is, gat a game camera they have them at any sporting goods store, set it up to face the door. They are motion activated. I have heard of people using aluminum foil to keep animals from getting on things, somehow the foil messes with them they don't like. Just staple some around the opening.

Ideal Poultry here in Texas does sex their chicks except for bantams. Most places don't sex bantams. I know you can get just hens from them because that is where I got my BA and EE hens from. For each of the large fowl when you go to the order page for them there should be a place where you choose if you want pullets, cockerels, or straight run. Sexed pullets do cost just a bit more than cockerels or straight run of course.

AMERAUCANAS​

Ameraucanas, known as the "Easter Egg Breed", are a multicolored breed. They have beards, muffs and a normal tail with a tail head. They are often incorrectly called Araucanas, which have ear tuffs, are rumpless, and do not have a tail head which gives them a bunny tail appearance. Most of the chicks sold as Araucanas are really Ameraucanas, which are excellent, efficient producers of large eggs of many colors and shades including blue and green.
Standard weights at maturity are males-5 lbs. and hens-4 lbs.
