Texas

I am really thankful I don't have a huge predator problem. Crossing my fingers it stays that way. If Whatnot my barred rock doesn't start roosting in the coop, I am afraid a raccoon or something is going to get her some night when I am not here to call her out of the tree and put her to bed.

I would worry about owls, too.

The best dog breeds for chickens would be an Akbash or Great Pyrenese. Both are excellent flock guards. I had an Akbash snatch a Bluejay out of the air for getting too close to my guinea pigs in my back yard. My rotties are good with my hens & don't bother them. I don't know that all would be.

I have heard that Anatolian Shepherds are good flock dogs too.

Great Pyrenese don't do well in the Texas heat.

JaJeanP - I remember you admiring German Shepherds a few days ago. My uncle has only ever had (pet quality) GS and he had a heck of a time with them eating his chickens. There are a few GS/Mastiff puppies at the animal shelter. What is your opinion on that mix? Both are guard dogs...right?

Welcome to your chicken addiction!! :D You are on your way!!

I have a couple of questions. 1. Do you have a heat lamp? They are not fully feathered and will probably need supplemental heat. 2. Do you have a (much) larger run and coop for them?
