Texas

I am in Dayton Texas. I am up to a LOT of chickens! But we are looking for jubilee orpintons...does anyone know who might have them? Eggs or chicks possibly?
Greenfire Farms has them, but they are a bit pricey. Rockin-g-Ranch has them too, better price.
Chicken Scratch Poultry has eggs. They others may have eggs too. Did not look.
I don't know anything about these places, but I know Greenfire is supposed to be good. I did a Google search and these are just dome of the ones that came up.

Donkeys and mules are both good at protecting their herds from predators. Not sure if they would protect chickens though. I see them more and more with cows and horses.

I rode by a farm today and 2 old guys were walking down the driveway with a net. I instantly knew what they were up to. They were going to fetch 3 chickens that keep ending up by the road. lol! I don't know if it is the same three all the time, but I see them by the road a lot.

In the evening when my girls go to roost, it is like when my kids were little and I had to referee. Cupcake and Whatnot refuse to get along. So Whatnot will try to roost in the trees. I want her safe in the coop. So there is a dance we do just before dusk. Cup cake refuses to be in the same coop as Whatnot, so she has to switch coops and crowd the other coop. They are finally in and all is well in the chicken yard.

Are Cupcake and Whatnot roosters? My roo's act like that...My cuckoo marans can't roost (even then it's just sitting at the bottom) until the EE/Welly mix rooster roosts. My hens fight too, but they just tend to peck the heck out of the newbies.

Turkey Potpie!!

Tomorrow I debone and make broth to freeze. The Mister loves his potpies!

Has everyone else used up their turkey yet??

JaJeanP - I remember you admiring German Shepherds a few days ago. My uncle has only ever had (pet quality) GS and he had a heck of a time with them eating his chickens. There are a few GS/Mastiff puppies at the animal shelter. What is your opinion on that mix? Both are guard dogs...right?

A German Shepherd Dog is actually herding dog. I think your uncle's dog is a bit of an anomaly. They should be good with livestock and small animals. I am not at all fond of mastiffs.

I'm not looking for one now--I have far too many dogs. I have four mini Dachshunds, the oldest 12, two 10 and one 8. When the oldest three Dachshunds go, I think I want another dog.

I also have a pit bull mutt who is just 3, but I don't expect he'll be very long-lived. I found him as 3-month old puppy, almost dead after being hit by a car. I took him to my vet to be put down, but the idiot vet went ahead and fixed him up without asking me and then gave me the bill. I can't believe I actually paid the bill! His leg was shattered in a million pieces--the radius, ulna and humerus were all fractured. He really should have been put down. I didn't look at the x-rays until long after, but she just put a cast on the leg from his elbows to his toes. Either she didn't see the fracture in the humerus above the cast--I'm talking about a complete fracture, even an idiot could see the two pieces of bone that should have been one--or she chose to ignore it and just patch him up. To fix the humerus with the shattered ulna and radius below it would have required surgery and she knew I wouldn't pay for that for a mutt puppy I found on the street. He must have been in incredible pain dragging that big wonking cast around with a complete fracture--two pieces of bone floating around grinding against each other--above that cast. He's a really tough dog. Eventually, the pain is going to be too much. He's an incredible dog, though. Really lovely temperament.
