So you know how early it starts getting warm here..well at least Houston area. I'm north now so I guess we'll see....
When's a good general date (or temp) for older chicks to start living in their coop outside, as opposed to a brooder?
I'm trying to figure out my timeline....lol

I put mine outside when they are over 5 weeks if it is above 50 at night. or usually around 9 weeks if below when they are almost fully feathered. outside here is a covered hoop house with a tarp top and the wind blocked when its cold. but they can get on the ground. also mine are large fowl rhode island reds.

Good afternoon all. It's 41 out and my chickens do not like to come out of the coop when it is 45 or below :(. I gave them leaves in the run with a little scratch and a tether ball cabbage. Any ideas? I don't want them cooped up in there all winter.

It's funny how different chickens are!! Mine are out of the coop waiting at my back door for morning treats at 6. They don't care if it is frigid or rainy. Up and at 'em is their motto

Hey, everyone! Long time, no post! I've been super busy with all the holiday hoopla, so I haven't had much time or energy to post anything. The weather has been dreadful lately with all this rain and the temp is 45°, which just makes every outdoor chore awful.

The chickadees are locked away in the coop until further notice, for their own protection. Some of these little guys get wet super fast, especially the Frizzles. Of course, they never seem to care either way, because they run out into the rain anyway, haha! So they are in the pen and I made them a "fancy" mix of their normal feed, cracked corn, game bird feed, pumpkin, yogurt, and hot water. They loved it and everyone was nice and warm afterwards. And my fridge was clean, so I have room for more food now, haha!

How has everyone else been doing? I hope the holiday stress is over for most of you! I've been cleaning up my room so I can start off the New Year right. Tomorrow, weather permitting, I'll be cleaning out the coop. Gotta start out fresh. If only I could purchase some New Year's quail, I'd be set! :D
