Hey, everyone! Long time, no post! I've been super busy with all the holiday hoopla, so I haven't had much time or energy to post anything. The weather has been dreadful lately with all this rain and the temp is 45°, which just makes every outdoor chore awful.
The chickadees are locked away in the coop until further notice, for their own protection. Some of these little guys get wet super fast, especially the Frizzles. Of course, they never seem to care either way, because they run out into the rain anyway, haha! So they are in the pen and I made them a "fancy" mix of their normal feed, cracked corn, game bird feed, pumpkin, yogurt, and hot water. They loved it and everyone was nice and warm afterwards. And my fridge was clean, so I have room for more food now, haha!
How has everyone else been doing? I hope the holiday stress is over for most of you! I've been cleaning up my room so I can start off the New Year right. Tomorrow, weather permitting, I'll be cleaning out the coop. Gotta start out fresh. If only I could purchase some New Year's quail, I'd be set!![]()
Good afternoon all. It's 41 out and my chickens do not like to come out of the coop when it is 45 or below. I gave them leaves in the run with a little scratch and a tether ball cabbage. Any ideas? I don't want them cooped up in there all winter.![]()

You are spring cleaning!! What do you know that we don't?Welcome back! I've been cleaning out a very large and full of crap garage. Purging is the goal. Cleaning, purging and now I need a garage sale. At least now I can walk into my garage and find things. Tomorrow I get into the master closet. Purge!!!!
I can't help you with the quail...
It's funny how different chickens are!! Mine are out of the coop waiting at my back door for morning treats at 6. They don't care if it is frigid or rainy. Up and at 'em is their motto
yes mine get out even in below freezing just after sunrise. they love to scratch and run around.![]()
Do they have a place to get out of the wind? During the winter we put up heavy plastic on the north/west sides of their runs for wind breaks - they are out all the time even when the temp is freezing and below. Having a wind break makes a big difference. If yours free range and don't have a run, you could consider building them a sheltered area to keep the north and west winds off of them and have food and water there to help entice them to the shelter.
Hi!It was 19* when I woke up this morning. BRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!! It's 28* now. It needs to warm up faster so I can ride my bike on this last day of the year!
I have a few things to share with everyone today. I'm going to learn to do both of those.I already paint, or at least used to a long time ago, so the painting shouldn't be to hard. I did cake decorating too.
Happy New Year!!
Have you tried hiding bugs for them to find? You could meal worms in a shallow dish and cover it with leaves in a few places. Change it up daily so they have to hunt for them. That is one thing I have seen...each chicken sure had their own personality! It's quite funny.
I haven't found a scratch that they go super excited over. I have tried the happy hen mix, sunflower seeds, 2 kinds of wild bird food, a block of mixed stuff, and cracked corn, the only thing they go nuts over outside of their treat bowl is bread and I know not to give it to them daily.
We have the east, north and west sides open but on cold windy days we put plastic up on the east side as that's the direction our wind comes from. The problem is the sheet of plastic takes away their morning sun and they are afraid of the plastic no matter how tight we secure it because wind still blows it. We didn't have much shade where the coop had to go so we built it with protecting them from the hot afternoon sun in the summer. I guess I have scaredy birds. They freaked when I put the leaves in the run lol. Their water is in the run as to limit humidity in the house. They come out for a few minutes and then go back in.
Thank you all for your assistance.
