700

Wow, a nice home .. but $500, I have to think about investing that much. At Callahan store, they have several coops for sales too, ranging about $200-350. Building one will save half of the cost.

How many hens are you planning to house? The ones for $200 to $350 will hold very few hens, maybe two. They say it will house more, but there really isn't enough room. I found the prefab chicken houses to be really poorly manufactured--just stapled together. I think a rat could tear them apart to get in.

I had three LF hens in a modified dog house that I bought at Tractor Supply for about $140. It is surprisingly well built. It has a floor space of about 45.5" x 31" x 32.5" high. It really is too cramped for three large fowl, but two are fine. It is only only temporary. I've since culled the excess cockerels, so have returned one of the hens to her regular housing. The two I've kept separately penned will hopefully be in good enough condition to show in two weeks. They are staying put, away from the cockerels.

I think it will be perfect to modify for breeding pens for the bantam Cochins. I want to put outside nest boxes on it.

Obviously, there isn't enough ventilation, but it is really cold right now so it isn't a problem and I was desperate to get those pullets away from the cockerels so I could get their feathers in order for the show. I have another little dog house, still in the box, that will be remodeled with proper ventilation and outside nest boxes. In a pinch, I can just add about 3/4 of an inch spacer under the roof and a latch to keep animals from being able to open it.

I like that. Easy to modify too. I wonder..... No, I have to wait. Did I mention I had to get 4 new tires for my car last weekend? {{{sigh}}} This is turning out to be one expensive year!

What????

Did someone say it is Valentine's Day?

Bah Humbug!
