What's a Watermelon box?
Have you seen those big deep boxes at the grocery stores that have watermelon, cantaloupe and such in them? Nice and deep, and pretty good size diameter. I got one of those at my local Wal-Mart and plan on using it as my brooder. It should give them plenty of room until I can put them in my in coop brooder, it still needs to be built. I still plan on getting a netting of some sort to put over the top. I will keep it out in the shop, totally inclosed (when doors are shut) with a concrete floor.

Great idea. I feel like an idiot for not figuring out the obvious.

I sent off my money today for my two blue bantam Cochins, a pullet and a cockerel. I've been waiting for a month to get them but the weather has just been too awful where they are--near Syracuse, NY--to risk shipping them. I'm hoping they get shipped tomorrow or Wednesday. I still can't get over that you can mail chickens.

+1 on both parts. :)

I went to a local farm store today and looked at the coop in a box they have for sale.  I did not buy it.   Uh oh!  This is not good.  I did get my taxes done and filed today. I am getting a refund. Not as big as I hoped for though.....   Still, there is a possibility that I can get a coop built. :)

Yea! I see a coop in your future. Maybe you can score a watermelon box as a brooder and start your flock. :) No, coop before chicks. Although having chickens with no where to put them is a great motivator.

Ms Jellybean, have you figured out what the cost of materials is for your coop? I have seen the coop you posted, but you said something about making it bigger. Did you buy the plans? I am asking because maybe it could be pre assembled for you by someone with tools and that loves projects and then you can assemble the parts without the need for power saws.

Painting eggs is quite a talent. I in vision a lot of paint on shattered shells. Wow what patience.
I love the watermelon box brooder idea. I am personally too short to reach into it to pic a chic or clean a mess, but it sounds like it should work nicely. Keep us updated.
This group is so creative and I love all the chicken pics and knowledge.

Watching my girls graze from my bedroom window is so relaxing.

I can't buy plans for the coop I want and I don't have a clue to figure out the cost. I'm good at many things, this is not one of them. :/ I can't find people to help me out with things around here either. I need to move out to the country where people are more helpful....
