I'm still technically henless since they are babies. They are supposed to be pullets. In fact, that is all Horaney's sells is pullets. You have to special request roos.

What a difference in your yard! It's really nice now!!

I'm hoping to have ALL hens! I would like to get a roo next year when I get some more babies. I want to raise these and get used to dealing with chickens again.

We had chicks when I was a kid too. I don't remember much about it except for slaughter day. Daddy would wring their neck and them darn headless bodies would chase me all around the yard.

Here's some pics of my new babies. They range from 4 days to about a week old. I have one Barred Rock that has a lot of wing feathers. I think she is the oldest one.




Here they are line dancing under my Premier heat plate.




I have to say I love my Premier heating plate. They seem to really like it. Not much peeping going on while they are under it. It's just a big change from what they are used to. I got them at a local feed store, Horaney's in Longview. They have a brooder room that is heated, so they don't use heat lamps. Best part is, they let you pick/catch your own if you want. They also know what kind they are getting every week, unlike some places I've checked.

I got 15 chicks. Three each of RIR, Australorp, Barred Rock, Americaunas (Easter Eggers) and Golden Comets. I really wanted some Orps and Wyandottes, but they wouldn't have any of those until the end of March. I figured that would too much of an age difference, so I got the BR's and Comets instead.

Slaughter day sounds terrifying...did they really chase you around? What a memory!

What are the thoughts on this coop?
Enough ventilation do you think..or I guess you can't really tell from this picture..
We're finalizing our coop plans tonight so we can hopefully start the buying tomorrow and construction this weekend!
I'm having a hard time deciding but I love the clean lines on this one, and it seems easy enough

I'm thinking of adding a dutch door, so I can give treats and such without them rushing me.
And maybe a bigger run if we can swing it. This is only 4x12, which isn't enough for 7 (5 large, 2 bantams). Everything else is pretty great.
At least it seems like it to me, with my limited knowledge.

I like that one. It is similar to many I have seen, but that top window is a really good idea for the Texas heat. Do you have plans for it or are you drawing them up? I think you will need it to be 6'x12' to hold your crew.

The only downside to this design (I really like it too) that I see is the framework on the inside offering an escape route for younger chicks. Its hard to tell from the picture but it looks like there's small chicken wire on the bottom, which is great to keep chickens in but won't keep predators out, and then larger wire on the upper sections. Our 3 week old chicks would be able to flutter up to the boards and then out of the upper section.

We're using metal lath to keep our younger chicks where we want them and the older chickens away. You can get it at the hardware store and its 27in x 8ft for around $8. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbrande...-LATH/202093395?N=5yc1vZbay2#customer_reviews
It was a lot easier to work with than the rolls of hardware cloth we also used last year but it isn't as wide.

I like this one. Looks like you have a large adjustable vent above the nesting box and also along the short side. That top triangle does open up? If not, maybe you can put hardware cloth there with a piece to cover it during bad weather?

I would put a different wire on it though. I would use hardware cloth. I know it's hard to work with, but once you start putting it up it does get easier. DH and I put ours up by ourselves. We got 4'x10' rolls and put it up a section at a time.

If your planning on building another attached run, then this coop should be big enough. Just make sure there's enough roost room inside for everyone. Dutch doors are a great idea. I put one in my coop. I haven't had to use it yet, but I love the idea.

Wow, I really like that! My husband built a henhouse last year and painted it white. At the time I really thought I wanted a more neutral color, so it wouldn't show dirt and would blend in with the outside, but I LOVE the white. It looks clean, even if it isn't, lol.
