What a great find! The wire is usually the most expensive part. There was no way these things would "slid right out". The hair and skin and dried and stuck to the metal tabs. I had to use my fingernails to pry the skin loose from the tab. I put ointment on the wound since prying the skin loose caused all but one of them to bleed. Welcome to the Texas thread! Hard to believe tomorrow is going to turn so bad. I did get some work done in my coop. I primed the back wall to get ready to put up the roost and build the in coop brooder. It was 78 in the shop today. Too warm for my babies to get under the heat plate, so they did the next best thing. The decided to keep the heat plate warm for tomorrow when they will need it, lol I hope ya'll don't mind me posting chick pics. I'm just so glad I finally got some!

Wow, sounds like they were put in incorrectly by the hatchery. I'm sorry it was so hard to get them out, it is never fun to have to hurt an animal that we are caring for. Hopefully next time it won't be as bad.

If you push up the little rounded tab on the end, it can be slid right out of the wing. I do them by myself, just hold the chick firmly in one hand and slide the tab up and maneuver it through the hole made in the wing.  Several of mine came from Atwoods with the wingband and now you can't tell they even had them in their wing. 

Why would you take them out? Wing bands/clips don't need adjusting as they grow. My understanding is they are to be put on and left on. I want to start showing so I've gotta get some real perment way for marking them. Gotta figure out if I'm wing banding, leg banding and exactly what I need on them.

hi everyone i'm new to BYC and to having chickens period. I was wondering if anyone had a silkie or silkie pullets that was around east tx like van, tx. everywhere I look its straight run i'm in need of a brooder but to no avail.... I would love your help thank you so much...

Good morning Texas! It's good to see so many new folks here. The front isn't supposed to get here til late tonight but I see most of Texas has already been hit. We've got rain forecasted for most of today.

I'm sad because my backyard is full of weeds and I can't Weed and Feed as I have done in the past. Reason being is because my hens free range from dawn til they put themselves to bed.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of the weeds without using Weed and Feed? My St. Augustine just can't get through the weeds. Ugh

Love your chickens! The gold really shines on the black hen. What is the difference between the Ameracauna and Easter Eggers? I know EE's are a cross between Ameracauna and another chicken, but how do you tell a purebred?

These are just hatchery chicks. No showing in their future. Just eggs and maybe yard babies if I get a roo next year. Also, the other chicks were really starting to peck at the wing bands. I didn't want that to cause any problems later.

It's a Premier heating plate. The small one. Good for 20-25 chicks. I love it!

Light rain has passed through here. Temp is nice out, 67 degrees. Enjoy everyone before the cold stuff shows up.

Does your current set up use the 2 sq ft and 8 sq ft per chicken right now?  Do they seem to be content with that amount of space?  We have plenty of room right now but as the chicks grow that we have, I'm afraid things might get a little snug while we decide who to keep and who to sell.  They will be layers, not extremely heavy breeds with hopefully a few bantams in the mix if I can convince my husband they are worth keeping.   I'm trying to make a temporary area to keep the majority of the ones we won't be keeping, a few extra roosters that we will process and I feel like I'm 'over thinking' how much space they are all going to need to get to about 16-20 weeks.  If we keep the 60 we have (plus we have more coming next week...eeekkk!)  we are looking at 240 sq ft for a coop and 600 for a run @ the 4/10 break down.  I feel like that's a lot of space for a temporary situation.  I guess we really need to sell off a few chicks now but after we sold the extras last year, we had SO MANY losses due to predators that I don't want to end up with just a few pullets/hens again.

Sorry it took so long to respond! I have not gotten my chickens yet but have done a lot of reading on this. The 4/10 is for long term for keeping them all happy for bad weather I could see having the 4sq ft in the coop cause the chickens would be inside for long periods of time. Here in Texas we do not have bad weather for weeks or months so they will be out and about. The 10sq ft in a run would be great if you could have that much room but it should be ok if you don't drop below 8sq ft if you watch closely. I plan on giving fresh grass and vegetables from the garden and letting them out some in the day. If you keep the run clean and don't let it chicken manure build up and get hard you should be able to get away with the 8sq ft. I plan on using a small tiller to turn the dirt about 1 time a month to help give them fresh ground. Maybe more if needed I will just have to keep an eye on it to make sure. And if this does not work out then I will make another coop and run to divide them up.
