Texas

The temp is dropping and the north wind has picked up. Brrrr!!!!! I thought it was supposed to getting nice. :/

I bought 2 windows for my coop. She only had two that weren't too big. I also picked up an antique plate. I am such a sucker for antiques. Somehow I have managed to figure out what a good deal is and what isn't. Thankfully!

These will go on the east and west sides of the coop.

I love this plate. They thought it was from the 1930's. I think that or maybe earlier.

Nice score on the windows. Look like a good size for great air flow. Pretty plate!

Brynn, they have chocolate orps. :)

I want a Welsummer too..... :)

chicken math has started and I don't even have chickens yet!

I would love to have some colored Orps! I'm hoping next year I can expand and get some breeder stock. Want to try my hand at hatchery first. I also want a Welsummer for the darrk eggs!

Does anyone know anything about Texas Natural Feeds?

I use it, but don't know much about it. I like that it's non GMO and non Soy. My chicks seem to like it.
Howdy! Thank you for the suggestion. That store is literally right down the road. We live behind the star! I drove past there today, but they were closed. Our coop is supposed to be delivered today and our neighbor is giving us four of her girls. We have no idea what we are doing. We moved here in October from Florida. My husband wanted to do this and after tasting fresh eggs I gave in!

Nothing like the taste of a yard egg. Beats store eggs every day and Sunday!

It has rained here since 8am. Literally nothing done. I hate wasted days. Chickens get all new pine shavings in their brooder. It was fun watching all the dust bathes.
I got stuff done on my coop!

We got a late start since DH had to work longer than he thought. We got the brooder and roost framed in and the brooder floor put in.

Good evening folks. I think we might have one of the two eggs our little bantam (Belle) is brooding. The're not hers, they are big eggs from our big red hens. Only been six days but pretty sure we can see shadow and air sac. the other one is still clear. She is such a good little hen. She raised four last fall. We had to move her to her own pen so the other big hens would quit laying eggs under her. I wish a couple more of my hens would start wanting to set. i'm getting some fertile eggs, just not enough hens. Guess they will know when it;s time. Meanwhile fingers crossed one is better than none.
Good luck with your egg hatching!

I knew not to go to Atwoods today cause I came home with thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. Picked up 2 white broad breasted turkeys.
So cute! I'm going to Atwoods tomorrow. Need a different feeder. Can you raise turkeys and chickens in the same pen with the same food?

Have a good evening everyone. Don't forget to change your clocks up 1 hour.

This is the place that has the light sussex. They have silkies too. I'm going to get my silkies from them so I don't have birds from so many locations. I think their birds will be a little higher quality and healthier in the long run.

Brynn, they have chocolate orps.  :)

I haven't heard back from the people with the BCM an legbars.  I need to source black Australorps now.  I can get them at the feed store, but since everyone else is from a breeder I would like the trend to continue.

I will be getting all the birds in April.  Is it better to get the silkies a couple weeks before the rest so they can get bigger first?

Chocolate Orps?!?
You are sooo bad for my chicken math lol
I wonder how I can talk Hubby into this one.....

Im obviously not an expert, but my Silkies get picked on so constantly, I HAVE to keep them separate. Now mine are 3 weeks apart though. I think the age difference combined with the general size difference doesn't help. My Silkies are 5 weeks and still smaller than my regular chicks were at 2 weeks lol

i have had a great week for chickens . hatched 60 heritage rhode island reds . got a shipment from ideal 20 sliver campines and 5 wellsummers. had to work today( didnt want to go in) and uncrated 2 air compressors packaged in plywood crates about 5' long 3' deep and 3'wide. perfect for brooders so i saved them from the dumpster and simply have to add a couple of hinges cut some air windows .

Yeah, I've looked on Craigslist. No thanks - I'm not interested in paying $20-50 for someone else's problem adult, I mean "special chicken." Nor am I interested in paying $3-5 for a scraggly God-knows-what chick from a dirt lot covered with 3 inches of poop. I may be new to this hobby, but I wasn't born last night.

From what I have read it is not wise to have chickens and turkeys in the same pen but they eat the same food

I have an easy way for you to get a chocolate orp. since I don't know how to sex chickens, you can come with me when I get mine. The CO can find her way home with you.
Easier to ask forgiveness than permission sometimes. ;) :)

Sounds like I need to have more than 2 weeks age difference for them....

Awww, I got my Silkies off Craigslist. :p
They're nothing exotic, nor a shining example of the breed im sure, but they're sweet babies :) Im very happy with them. Im sure there can be some sketchy people on there, but there are some legitimate, honest people on there too
