My best friend crashed his bike yesterday. He was riding when he hit some mud and went down hard. He ended up with a dislocated and broken pinky and 6 stitches in his eyebrow. He is very sore today. I am so thankful it is not worse, I know it could be. My prayers for his safety were answered.
It is killing me that I can't be in Ohio to care for him. I'm still having a hard time getting over his moving.

Gorgeous day here today! I want to get out and ride again. (I got sunburned yesterday on my ride!) We have winds moving in though. Not sure that I can. I'll have to see how things are in an hour. I don't like getting blown around on my bike. I may just work and then do some yard work. I can ride Thursday on this week.

I am loving this weather!


On a side note, I may end up with different breeds of chickens than planned and from the feed store. The ones I really want I can't source locally, unless I do a feed store. I will still get the silkies and hopefully a cream legbar from the breeder nearby.

Still want to get another 10-15 pullets and Roo or two. Want to be able to replace the chickens I process for the freezer on an annual basis. But will see how that works out for now... May just have to settle for pullets for now....

Maybe this afternoon I might charge up the camera, and shoot some pics of the Redneck Heaven's Coop.

Pics are always great! This being the Texas thread, I would love to see a pic of all the members coops. It would be very helpful for those of us who are just starting out.

I would like to process my own chickens. I never have, and don't know if I could, but I would like to give it a try one day. DH says he will help me with anything but that. He can't stand the way the boiled chicken feathers smell. Those auto pluckers are nice, but a tad too expensive for me. Maybe one day.

Winds are supposed to get up to 30 mph here this afternoon. Take care if you get to go and ride. Great weather for riding except for the wind. Hopefully you will be able to get some of the chicks you are wanting.

I am looking for a good food to feed and have discovered that there is a LOT to choose from! I'd like to buy locally so ordering isn't something I want to do right now. Maybe open to that in the future when I have a better handle on how long feed will last.

D&L carries a brand by Coyote Creek Farm that is supposed to be good. Has anyone tried it?

The other feed store carries Bryant and Red River. NOt sure what organic they have. I won't shop at the third store. I don't like the guy that runs the place.

I won't ride if it is too windy. I don't want to get blown over, or worse, into traffic. It is really scary to be blown around on your bike.

They guy I spoke to on Sunday skins his birds with the feathers still on. He doesn't like to mess with boiling either. He said it was pretty easy.

I've heard of people skinning them instead of plucking. Thing is, being home raised chickens, the skin is one of the best parts. Not like the skin on store bought chickens with all the yuk that is fed to them.

We have 5 RIR's in the big one and 4 varied breeds in the smaller one. They free range from about 8:00am to dusk. The 4 breeds are Americauna, Easter Egger, Barred Plymouth Rock, and Buff Orpington.

Well, I am in Quitman, Tx.  We are a small little town about 40 miles north of Tyler, Tx.  I grew up with Chickens and goats and I said I would NEVER have chickens.  Well, it's 30 some odd years later and I am converting a stall in our barn for my chicken coop and I have 20 little chicks right now.  I couldn't be more excited!  Happy to have found this great web site.

It's funny how you think things are going to go one way and then they don't. I should be used to that by now since that always happens with me. I still get frustrated over it though....

What am I talking about? The breeds of chicks I want to get. grrrrr!!!!!!

My plan for breeds I"m getting is changing by the minute right now. I think it is settling down though.

I'm getting silkies and a cream legbar from the breeder in Farmersville, a Delaware from the feed store (in May), I can get a BA from the feed store too at the same time if they still have them, and BCM's from a guy in TN (from on here). I'll be getting 3 of them, but really only want one. I can sell the extras, or keep them. I'm still looking for a buckeye. Hoping the feed store can get one for me.

I wonder if I should just get them all from MPC... I think I will end up paying about the same. I could get them about the same time.... Of course sourcing them from breeders is better, even if some are coming from the feed store.

My mind is spinning. Need to take a step back here and regroup.
