Texas

Thanks to everyone for the information!!! I appreciate it greatly.

SlipsWife,
My roof will have a two foot overhang all the way around. The tarps on the sides I put them will be installed ~1 foot down from the roof to allow ventilation all the way around. I am using the tarps to keep blowing rain out of coop/run but will be mounted like wings or flaps to allow as much wind as possible in the summer and then down as needed in the winter. When I first started research on this site six months ago my vision of a coop was totally different than what I am now building! This site is awesome with so many people willing to help!

Thanks again Everybody!!!!

David

I just got a text from an Iraq War vet. He wants me to build him a coop, but doesn't have much money. The coop he wants costs $500.00. I am doing it virtually at cost, and what he doesn't know is, I am throwing in 6 or 7 birds with the deal. The question I am asking is this, our "all knowing government is CUTTING the budget for the people who VOLUNTEER to go into harms way to protect us. These people have been shot at, mined, bombed, and who knows what else. I am trying to start a movement to supply these patriots a way to transition back to civilian life with very little stress. All of you know that raising chickens is very therapuetic. Some of these people come home with problems, that make it hard to return to civilian life. What do you say we help them. I am willing to give everything I have to help them. Let's start something in Texas, please give me your thoughts.
I think that is a most wonderful Idea!!

I write to soldiers - every week - and have been for several years now.

I hooked up with an organization called Adopt a Platoon. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. :) I am currently writing a young man in the Navy and lady in the Army. I will continue to do this as long as there is a need.

Well I took today off because I had a dentist appt. my hygienist wasn't working next week during my spring break. I thought I'd have a chance to see my girls-Katrina just got home from Baylor yesterday. As it turns out my oldest decided to take my youngest to the zoo today-that's what happens when all parties involved don't communicate. Lol
After my dentist appt u went home and was outside doing a few animals things when I noticed one of my rabbits was trying to hop but couldn't. He is very old and daily I wake up expecting to see him no longer with us. Well I called the vet but they have no one who works on rabbits there today, but I couldn't imagine letting him go even one more day not being able to hop. And he was continuously chewing on one of his legs.
So through many tears I made the executive decision to take him and have them put him down. Not a hard decision, because he has many issues. I know he is in bunny heaven and is able to hop, hear, and play with all the other bunnies. Throughout this morning I've been texting and calling Katrina to see if she wanted to have lunch. But never an answer. Well after I took the bunny to the vet I went to my OTHER daughters place of employment because I needed a hug. We cried and then I left to go home. Alone! I've got 4 kids!!!
I called Katrina because I surmised that she was sleeping and it was nearly noon and she needed to get out of bed.
We talked and I a
Skied her is she wanted to go eat and she said sure! So I told her to call me back when she was ready.
She called me back a few minutes later not because she was ready but because she was ditching me for a friend she hasn't seen in a while.
Oh well. I'm going to clean the bathroom, sweep and mop and go back to school at 3 to tutor. Then straight to babysit.
I'll kinda be glad when this day is done.

But I'm ok-kids will be kids and I'll always love them!

Besides I've got my chickens and 5 other bunnies!

:cd :bun

Sorry about your bunny.

Is it necessary to have a pond in order to have ducks? I love ducks. Just the basic white duck nothin fancy. But I would want them to be happy and healthy.
My neighbour bought one of the small ponds from Home Depot and uses it for her ducks. I'm not sure if it got buried or if she just built up the ground around it. She has a pump that recirculates the water to keep it moving. I think ducks really like to be able to swim. I would get them something so they could. A kiddie pool will work too. The Fresh Eggs Daily site has a link for Ducks Too on it. I would think there is a lot of good info there. I know there is for chickens. :)

Practice 'escorting' your group into the coop/run from free ranging a few times BEFORE you are in a hurry trying to put them up. For a week or so before letting them out to free range, have them associate a special bucket with treats and either shake it or use a short phrase, we just repeat the word chick, to get their attention. Then when its time to put them up, all you have to do is grab the container, get their attention with the noise and they will follow you in. Trust me, herding chickens is NOT fun...herding chickens in a hurry, not fun...herding chickens in a freezing down pour because they can't figure out how to get back around to their coop/run and you are by yourself and they keep running the wrong way from you and you weren't the one that let them out but you're the only one around...you guessed it...NOT FUN!

Kind of like herding cats, huh? Remenber the herding cats commercial from the Super Bowl a few years ago?

MsJellybean I can not wait for you to get chickens. You will have your favorites and it will probably not be because of the breed. Hens have personalities. I can't wait for you to bond with your babies.
I am excited too! I need this after the rough start to this year that I am having.

Thank you for staying in touich with these soldiers and giving them a little piece of home. I cannot thank you enough. If you can find it in your heart to help me with this, it would be greatly appreciated. All I am asking is to get the word out and have them get in touch with me thru this site or thru my email: [email protected]. I come from a military family, and really believe that raising chickens will help these vets adjust to civilian life.

Contact Adoptaplatoon.org. They may jump on this.

What kind of help are you looking for? I can post on my fb page about it but I would need more info for people than what is here. I won't put your email address so the trolling bots won't grab it and spam you. People can message me.
