You should check out the Deep Litter method. I know there are some who don't like it, but I do and am glad I switched over! Check out these forums:

Lisa :)
I plan on doing deep litter. In fact, I started working on mine this weekend. I've got about fifteen 39 gal trash bags full of leaves already stored in the shed.. Instead of bagging these up, thought I would just go ahead and put them in the coop. I did this yesterday. I finished filling it up this morning before the rains came.

Lisa, how do you like the DLM? How long have you been using it? Any tips you can give to us new to this method? Thanks!
I'm so glad it finally started to rain here. I think it's been raining for about an hour now. I love the sound of it dripping off the roof.

I'm not on Pinterest, for good reason. But my friend sends me pictures from time to time and then I get to looking and .... How did it get so late!!

Look what I stumbled upon today. I love these old house looking coops. They fit so perfect in my neighbourhood too - Historic District. I think the all glass shed would be neat as a coop as long as you could open it all up in the summer.

I love the look of the rustic ones! If I lived in town, I would like to have a rustic coop. It would be nice and breezy with the windows open during the summer.
I see y'all all talking about chicken shows is there a website that shows where and when they have these?
I would like to locate some in our area also. The only one I could find will be in Oct in Center, Tx. It's the East Texas Poultry Festival.

We didn't get much rain today. Sprinkled a few times. Around 4:30, the rain started and has been raining ever since. I'm just glad we haven't gotten any of the bad stuff like was predicted. It has thundered a few times, but that is all.

I spoke to zootopia (Dawn) today. She told me Melissa Rose passed away. Thought some of you that have been around awhile would want to know.
O that is so sad. She was always upbeat and very helpful. Thank you for letting us know.

I love the DL!! When I first received chickens 3 years ago, I was in there every day cleaning. Then there was the changing of litter, the flies, the smell....UGH!!! Since I switched, maybe 2 years ago, no odor, no flies, and it saved me money on pine shavings. You change it out once or twice a year. You leave about 1-2" in there and put new shavings on top. What you take out is good compost (ready to use). My girls loved to scratch around in there. I would go in and rake and make everything nice and smooth. I go back to lock them in for the night and it looked liked we had a bombing episode!

This is the pitcher I got to ferment my feed in. I think I may pick up a couple more of these (different designs) so I can have multiple batches going. How many batches should I have going of this? I'm clueless at this.
I wasn't going to say anything because I know people FF in plastic buckets made into strainer inside other plastic buckets and seem to do fine but I just wanted to give you a heads up... I only know from a baking stand point with sourdough starter (which from what little I've read about FF, seems to be about the same concept) that you should never put starter in a plastic container. When doing sourdough starter I always had to use glass or ceramic containers, I used a plastic container once, the starter went bad. I've read about people doing FF and not knowing what they did wrong but it going bad on them and I wonder if it might be the container they use? Just wanted to give you a heads up, if you notice a funny smell or the FF seems 'off', don't give up on it and maybe try a glass container. I know Hobby Lobby sell oversized Mason Jars (look online for a 40% of coupon), I think I've seen gallon size Mason Jars at Target too. You could poke holes in the top for ventilation...only if the pitchers don't work!
You really have to look at the recycling # on all supposedly people safe products :barnie some of them aren't

So sad, I talked to her weeks ago but I know she had some serious health issues :( I hope she had someone helping with all her chickens, I know she said her husband had a long drive to work everyday
