Texas

I know what you mean, I just told my wife, if they run out of water, which they won't, tonight they can drink off each others back.

Mine too didn't have sense to go in the covered area. They are out in it, eating grass and bugs.....

Mine kept looking up like they were irritated, then kept on foraging. Lol.
Only a few went into the covered area. When it started coming down hard I ran out and moved them all in there.
I spoke to zootopia (Dawn) today. She told me Melissa Rose passed away. Thought some of you that have been around awhile would want to know.
Oh no

I only had a few exchanges with her but she was so sweet and helpful....
My thoughts are with her husband and family :(

Yes, Poultry Show Central.

http://www.poultryshowcentral.com/

There is not likely to be many more shows in Texas until the fall--it is just too hot.  There is a show in two weeks at the end of March in Beaumont, South Texas State Fair.

I believe all Texas shows are limited to Texas residents--the competition is restricted which makes the shows smaller.

Sorry I missed people from this thread who went to the Fancy Feathers show.  Did the cream legbar person on this thread man the information booth about the breed?

Well he was there and had a booth. Granite Plains farm.
Did you not make it?.

Hello fellow Texans!
I moved here in 2004 and absolutely love this state! We are in Cedar Creek just outside of Austin.
The people are so friendly and helpful, Which is where my question today comes in.

How much protection from the elements does my flock need here?

with the weather here my husband is thinking that a 3 sided shelter will be enough to keep them safe and warm in the winter and will allow enough breeze in the summer months to keep them shaded and cool in the summer heat. I like the full coop which we do have but we are thinking of changing things up a little bit.

Does anyone have some advice on this?

just a quick note my ladies are always protected from predators on all four sides!

Thank you in advance for your assistance with this decision.

Hello from Liberty Hill. This is a great site. I have not found it too hard to keep my flock happy. They run the yard and have lots of shade and shrubs for protection.

x2 granthamkk on the easter eggers. I learned along time ago that pretty chick usually means roo. I went to my favorite feed store yesterday and they had chicks and plants everywhere. I was looking in the chick brooders and found a chick being pecked badly. Of course they were white babies (Ideal 236) so it was really obvious and ugly. I pulled her out and took her to the front. They check them often but had been super busy so they missed it. They asked me to please take her as no time-no place etc to treat or separate her. So that's how I got home with a single bloody LOUD chick that doesn't fit my program. She is very healthy except missing some hide. I have 5 week old babies in the baby run outside and eggs hatching in 4 days so she doesn't even fit in age wise with anyone. I'm not too concerned, it will work itself out.

 :clap

I wasn't going to say anything because I know people FF in plastic buckets made into strainer inside other plastic buckets and seem to do fine but I just wanted to give you a heads up...

You really have to look at the recycling # on all supposedly people safe products :barnie some of them aren't

What is the number you should be looking for?
#4,2 & 1 are considered safest, don't reuse #1's but no plastic is really safe, stainless steel 2nd but be careful where it's made & only foodgrade.

pictures please :) chickens can take the cold very well, just need a good windbreak, its more important to have shade & ventilation in the heat we have here. These are a few of our coops that mine have done fine in for 3 years now The coop in the 1st picture gets a sheet of plywood lended against this side in the winter
