chickens can take the cold very well, just need a good windbreak, its more important to have shade & ventilation in the heat we have here. These are a few of our coops that mine have done fine in for 3 years now The coop in the 1st picture gets a sheet of plywood lended against this side in the winter

& welcome from Selma

Here are my coops. I free range my girls from about 8:00am to dusk. Both buildings are 4 sided, but well ventilated and we leave the door on the front of the coop (not the run) open all night so if the birds want to roost out in the run, they can. Perches are in the run for this purpose. We haven't had a predator problem, the runs are very secure.

I wish I would have found you. I was looking around. I should have sent a pic of myself. I was looking for a tall woman with short hair

there were several. How did your chickens do? I could not tell whose chickens any of the entries were. I could only stay until about 12:30. I missed the cluck off.

There were not a lot of Cochins and mine were not in the condition I would have liked them to be in--two had only come to me three weeks ago. My blue pullet was Reserve Breed, but that isn't saying anything since there just weren't a lot of birds there. I did speak to the judge after about the cockerel's pattern, which I wasn't happy with at all. He wasn't as unhappy about it as I am, so I guess he can stay.

The show was divided between an Open show and a Junior show. The junior show seemed to be the first rows near closest to the corner to the snack bar and furthest away from the parking. My birds were across from the Silkies. It was very confusing because there were Cochins in the Junior show just a row over. Here are three of the birds I took (my fourth bird was a blue cockerel)--this blue pullet was the only blue Cochin in the show, so would have stood out:

How much fresh pine shavings do you add at a time? 1-2 inches? You do this weekly right? I need to read the article on it again....
I don't add shavings weekly. By adding it every week, you are going to run your expenses up. I add when I think it needs it. Like this past winter, if it was going to get down to freezing I just added more for the warmth. I start out with 4-6". I won't switch it out now until fall maybe later now that I have lost my flock.

Someone mentioned that DE made the DL smell funny. I have used DE lightly in the coop and it didn't affect the smell. Of course, my coop is very well ventilated. I hope this helps.

Hello fellow Texans!
I moved here in 2004 and absolutely love this state! We are in Cedar Creek just outside of Austin.
The people are so friendly and helpful, Which is where my question today comes in.

I thought that one might be yours. Like you said there weren't many in the show.

Well I only have 3 things left to do on my coop and only 2 things that I have to do before the chickens can move in!! I need to paint the floor with the Rubber-Coat #57, I need to frame out the roost bars and poop board, and I need to put corrugated roof panels up. This weekend proved to windy for that job again!!! I have everything on site and I can smell victory.

Yay! Your almost finished! I hope you find the time to finish up.This week doesn't look too bad. Hopefully it will last so that you can finish up. We still need to put the roosts up in my coop, but the babies don't need it right now so we took a break this week.
A friend posted this on my Facebook page. I thought y'all might enjoy it.

What a good daddy!

Getting cold/windier outside. My wind chimes are ringing up a storm!
