Texas

I've been reading through the one deep litter thread on and off today and came across this update. Don't use DE (also previously mentioned here in this thread).

It is so windy here today. Yuck. I had planned to work outside, but I think I would need to be tethered to the ground.
We had 44 mph gusts earlier. Not sure what they are now.

Good news though, we got 1.5" of rain here yesterday!

Brings the yearly total to just over 2 inches now. :/ Pray for rain people...for the whole state!

Hello fellow Texans!
I moved here in 2004 and absolutely love this state! We are in Cedar Creek just outside of Austin.
The people are so friendly and helpful, Which is where my question today comes in.

How much protection from the elements does my flock need here?

with the weather here my husband is thinking that a 3 sided shelter will be enough to keep them safe and warm in the winter and will allow enough breeze in the summer months to keep them shaded and cool in the summer heat. I like the full coop which we do have but we are thinking of changing things up a little bit.

Does anyone have some advice on this?

just a quick note my ladies are always protected from predators on all four sides!

Thank you in advance for your assistance with this decision.

We are doing a 3 sided coop/run. I don't know how it will work since my chicks are still in the brooder. I think it will work out fine though. I just need to put up a wind break this winter along the West side.

Click on the link in my sig to see my coop in progress. It is almost finished! :)

Very windy here too. Just got back in from putting a long clear trash bag up on the brooder to make sure the babies have a wind break tonight.Temps are supposed to be near freezing.

I with ya'll. Went to the store and I thought I needed to toss someone a rope and pull me in because the wind was blowing so hard. We get just enough sun to make us ready to "play" and then the next day it feels like winter again.

So I have been building my list of plants for the nursery, planning out my garden and making my project list. LOL Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the rainy days but I'm ready for a little more sun. Of course July we will be ready for some cooler days.

Ok I need all the input I can get here. Now the best thing to do is to tell me something can't be done and I will bust the midnight oil to make it happen. Pros and Cons are good but I'm a positive person and I want to fix cons. LOL With that said..... Waterfall/ponds/water features in the chicken pen. Now I don't want poo soup, so my mind is seeing rocks, shallow lower layer pond with water running over rocks and a filter system with my pump. Now I know I can't be the only person who has ever thought of this. I'm thinking even maybe water plants in the pond area??? So any thoughts, ideas, solutions, pictures would be great. So HELP!! LOL

Yes, I went and spoke to a young gentleman who had an information booth on Cream Legbars.  Was that the  BYC Texas member?  I wish I had known.

I wish I would have found you. I was looking around. I should have sent a pic of myself. I was looking for a tall woman with short hair :) there were several. How did your chickens do? I could not tell whose chickens any of the entries were. I could only stay until about 12:30. I missed the cluck off.
