Anyone raising Road Island Reds? I've got access to a few free, I repeat FREE RIR pullets from my wife's coworker and I was curious if anyone had any experience with them they'd like to share... still... can't beat free!

I would love too.  My hubby comes back home on Tuesday of next week and when he comes home, I'm stuck to him like glue.  LOL  So I could only go this week or on Monday.  But I would love to come up and meet up with ya'll and go if we could come up with a good day.

:hit Sorry, my spirit has been broken this evening.  My oldest Son moved back home last fall and is working to save money and get this ducks in line so to speak.  He will be 20 this year and he and his girl friend are getting married May or 2015.  The have been dating for 2 years and ..... well long story short, it's been a bad night and my nerves are shot.  Luckily he leaves to go back to work tomorrow for 2 weeks, (we are a oil business family.)  So my youngest son who is 18 (and MUCH calmer) and I will have a few days of calm and happiness without any ill tempers.  LOL I just can't stand negative mind sets and gripping.  LOL:barnie

Ok, I'm done whining.  Someone give me some cheese.  LOL

So yea, I hope we can come up with a day that works.  A day trip filled with fluffy little balls of joy would be just what I need.  :jumpy

Girl sounds like you need an adult beverage.

:hugs

Bicycles belong in the house. ;)  Not joking.  I would never put my bike in the garage or a shed. I could never replace it if it got damaged.  I have a bike room in my house. It is also doubling as the chicken brooder room now.  :)

Not here. :) There isn't room for the bikes, helmets, and scooters. I really wish we had a basement to store things in, but we don't. We wouldn't be able to replace what we have, ftmp, either.

I bought a couple of containers of live meal worms from the local pet shop. I have no idea how many were in them. I use a big shallow tote--the kind that goes under a bed. I put in a few pounds of rolled oats. I sometimes buy oat bran and wheat germ for them. I'll throw something like a slice of potato, a banana peel, slice of fruit or a bit leaf for water. I try to only feed them with reasonably good food. I think you can raise them on wheat bran. The trick is not to get it too humid--mold and humidity will kill the whole colony. I let them multiply for awhile before I harvested any. They will do a lot better now it is warmer.

I use the "deep litter" method for them and don't clean it. It is getting gross with all the shed skins and dead beetles/larvae that I really want to clean it out. It is only two or three inches deep at the most. Shallow is better for them.

I need to set up another colony in case something goes wrong with the one, I'll always have another.
What happens when they turn into beetles? Don't they escape then?

Come on up A1momof3! We'll make it a field trip!
If you click on that link she put up a few mages back it shows all the birds they raise.
I had to stop looking at it....lol

I know only too well what you are going through. My oldest (almost 22) isn't allowed to live at home any longer for (I think) the same reasons. I can't handle the way he will treat me. He was in rare form tonight (there must be something in the air) and I got it over the phone and in texts. At least I can hang up and delete them. Not quite so bad. My youngest (turned 20 today! No way!!! How can my baby be 20?!?) lives with me and is much better. He has his moments, but nothing like his brother.

We have 2 bikes - mine and my sons - in the house in a spare room. Our house is small, but I still found room for the bikes. They started out in the kitchen. That is where we kept them at our old house. Much smaller kitchen here so that didn't work. I'm still trying to find places for things in this house after 1.5 years here. Downsizing is hard!

My pride and joy that keeps me sane.

I don't know what I would do without it.

edit: I miss having a basement too.

They turn into beetles right? Can the beetles get out? Do you put the tote cover on? Holes in the top? Or open top?

Hi folks. I asked this in the injury forum, but no answer yet.
My new little chicks has its middle toes curled under. Is there anything that can be done to correct this?
I have a Hen who broke her toe as a chick it is completely sideways she has no trouble getting around or digging or scratching. She will never be a Show girl but Nattie is one of my best layers. Animals adapt better than humans.

If you can manage it you could try to use a small strip of self stick horse tape to try and brace it for her. That might help her straighten up

That reminds me if anyone near Brookshire/Katy, Texas know of anyone selling a three wheeled bicycle I need one. I bought a second hand bike the other day. Unfortunately, I no longer have the coordination to ride a two wheel bike due to a motor vehicle accident I had two years ago. Anyone Harris co, waller co, Austin, Colorado, Wharton, Victoria, Fort Bend, Austin or any other counties near this that I missed.

I need to stay healthy to keep up with my chickens and other farm work.

I've got experience with RIR more then most chicks lol how old are they

No, the beetles just stay in the litter. I keep a lid on it (usually) but have never found a beetle anywhere but in the box. I forgot to mention that the box has lots of holes drilled in it for ventilation. That's important--there can't be a build up of humidity.
