Got to run to Swann and get me a couple of rain barrels and a couple of big buckets to make my feeders. What to do...... what to do...... with out a truck, I guess it's put the top down on the pony and carry my bungee straps! You would be amazed at what I can haul in this car. My daughter took this last year when I got a Futon for my scrapbook room. LOL

I think this is the best typo on here so far.

Of course a divorce can feel that way....

What is moscato? I guess I could go and look it up on Google...

Amen to that!

Just about died in my trainer. When the house id cool it isn't so bad. I need to get a second fan for the warmer days. What I really need is to ride outside! Hopefully that will happen this weekend.
It's a sweet, effervescent white wine...very yummy!

It was pretty obvious--she was choking and her trying to clear her airway--it was pretty obvious. She then declined over a few hours as fluid filled her lungs. I took her to the vet (against my "farmer's" better judgement--after all it was my own d@mn fault) thinking she would be dead by the time I made the long drive into the city. He gave me the options--Lasix to clear the fluid out of her lungs and injectable antibiotics (Baytril) to combat any infection that might set up. He said her lungs/airway weren't as bad as they actually sounded--it was the fluid build up that was causing the noise and her terror of suffocating. I thought about it. Let me see, a kazillion dollars I don't have for a chicken worth almost nothing against trying to save my favorite chicken's. Decision made. He beamed when I decided to try to save her and said how much he wanted to treat her.

My vet wanted to be a poultry pathologist when he was in school--he is only 10 hours short of a degree in poultry science--but decided in school he liked chickens too much to only work on dead chickens, so now he is an avian vet in San Antonio. He doesn't work on many chickens, so he is always happy to see mine.

So far, I'm crossing my fingers that she will live. At the moment, she is really good. Once we cleared the fluid from her lungs--I guess her body was setting up the response to drowning--she has never looked back. The crop has finally settled down and is acting normally. That took months to sort out. She is gaining her weight back. She laid an egg today, poor thing, and maybe one a couple of days ago--not sure because the other crop-issue bird was with her in the pen and I don't know what that one's eggs look like.

Just a bit of information: chickens (maybe birds in general) don't have the cells that sweep debris out of the lungs the way humans (and maybe all mammals) have. So, anything that goes into the lungs stays in the lungs until the body seals it off and/or the white blood cells go outside the capillary walls into the lungs, grab the foreign matter and go back into the blood stream and do whatever white blood cells do when they've "eaten" foreign material. Aspiration of a foreign body is a bigger issue with birds than with people.

Here is a picture of her. She's a splash Ameraucana from the same breeder Ms. Jellybean is getting her Ameraucana from. They might even be related.

Oh my goodness that is scary. I don't think I could look at one of my peeps, see if suffering and not help it! Good thing your Vet is so good with birds!! Wow that's a scary thought.

SO, I'm thinking I need some Ameraucana goodness. Could you please share the source of these lovely birds? Are they locals where I can go pick up live birds?
Right!
I have Easter Eggers, which are crosses w/ Ameruacanas. They're very sweet birds!

Is She a splash? She's gorgeous

Moscato is a deliciously sweet wine. I don't drink much and when I do it has to be sweet like candy. This is the only wine I have found, that is available for less that 10$, that is palpable for me. The D'Asanti is just even sweeter.
Have you tried Cupcake Moscato?
It's my second fav (on my budget lol)
But this one was Bartenura and was very VERY yummy. And only $15

I came home from my appointment and put my Ameraucana chicks out in the aviary. I had to lock up the Pionus as she was going to ground wanting to have a nest in the crate I brought them outside in--can't have that, she could really hurt one if she bit it.

As I was putting them in the crate, I noticed one had an a prolapse caused by the urates (the white stuff) drying on the cloaca. That stuff does not wash off! I washed with baby shampoo and slathered her/his cloaca with antibiotic ointment and then gently worked to get it off. As soon as the dried urates were off, the prolapse went back into the body. Whew!

I covered the brooder with paper towels (so I could see a bowel movement) but nothing. I covered the brooder up, hoping the chick would go under the brooder plate and dry off but no such luck. I finally decided that outside in 85F humid weather was better than in my cooler house so put baby outside. As I was blow drying the chick, s/he did pass urates and urine but no feces. I'm a bit concerned. I gave the chick a bunch of meal worms so I know it has some food in his/her crop.

Suggestions.

Congrats!!!!

Fatigue started for me before I even found out. Lol. And I was QUICK at finding out.
Me too. I was sick at conception and didn't stop being sick until after the baby was born. Do you know how much it hurts to throw up when you are nine months pregnant???? I carried barf bags everywhere I went. I became an expert at throwing up in a crowd of people without anyone noticing. Pregnancy was just awful for me. If I had to live the rest of my life like that I would have killed myself. The kids were worth it, but getting them was really awful.

So.....I keep looking at all these beautiful breeds, and I think EVENTUALLY (like years from now) I may want to look into breeding.
I'd love to help repopulate some of the smaller breeds, like the White Faced Black Spanish and the different Orpingtons...I think I'd really enjoy that.
Hubby said "If you can prove that you can actually give away chicks, instead of keeping all of them, then I'm all for it."...
So I go "So how do you test me? We just hatch out some chicks?" And he goes "Yep!"

Obviously not until next year or so, but how fun! I'm prepared, I've got my Silkies and a mellow BO!

The breeder is Paul Smith in Gainseville, Texas.

Go to: http://www.ameraucana.org/

The Ameraucana Breeders Club (above) has a breeders section. You can find a breeder by state.

Paul Smith has some of the best Ameraucanas in the US. He is the Ameraucana Breeders Club director for this area. I had both groups of chicks (last year and this year) mailed to me. He has a waiting list, so I don't know what he has available for the rest of the year.

Oh my gosh, I was so sick with my daughter I couldn't eat or drink and I started (TMI) throwing up blood because of all the acid, etc.
I'm not a meds person but when they offered me Zofran, I took it!
I can't imagine 9 months of that. I'm sorry for you
I didn't get sick right away..but man..did I turn into a "you-know-what" just..overnight. Hated everyone. lol!
And then I was in the hospital 3 times with my son.
Those little critters were a lot of work, but you're right: they're worth it!
