Good day folks, Was a very long weekend for us, so no time for BYC, tried to catch up on posts last nite. Will be glad when things settle down...yeah right! . Enjoyed the articles/ Y'alls chicken coops and runs are looking great. They will be very happy.

Some beautiful birds you folks have, when I first came on board I had no idea there were so many colors and patterns to be found in chickens, wow!

Upon closer inspection of our newest hatchling we have figured that it is a sebright and Abraham (roo) mix not only does is have black on it but it has tiny yellow feathers on it's legs. Really hope it will make. Doing great right now. Will be interesting to see what it looks like grown.
We have thought about getting 2 or 3 more chicks from TS that would be about the same age as the little one. The rest of the gang will be too big for it to hang with. That way Belle can have some free time again and maybe want to brood some more eggs before it gets hot and the little one can grow up with other chicks and not run the risk of being hurt by the big birds. It would be 20 to 1 not good odds for one chick and one bantam momma

MsJellybean...I'm glad you ae thinking about getting some chicks after all. When my kids started working I use to help them budget their money. I wanted them to be sure their bills were paid first, but I told them to also allow something for themselves even if it was something small each paycheck. When you work hard and give yourself nothing it gets discouraging and harder to keep doing the hard stuff. So I'm glad you are going to reward yourself for all the hard stuff you've gone thru. You've earned it and deserve it. We all deserve a reward for ourselves especially when things get rough.

Gonna be doing chicken house cleaning this afternoon after I get back with bales of chips.

So...How many of you are closet Survivalists/Preppers and chickens was just another step in your quest for self-effeciency and sustainability? Well, I have a confession...

I'm not like one of those people you see on TV marching around their neighborhood wearing an NBC suit and carrying an AR-15...besides I don't own an NBC suit.

I'm more like the greenie/homesteader-type that wants to live off-grid as much as possible and have as little Government intrusion as can be had in this day and age. As a free people I believe we are entitled to that. Over the last few years I have being gathering skills and knowledge to basically try to live the way our depression-era relatives lived. I've actually found it hard in that some of the items they used on aregular basis are not readily available without ordering from the internet from nether regions like Nepal. Take washboards for example. One cannot simple walk into Mordor (Walmart), and buy a washboard. (Let me know when you get that pun.

).

The end goal is to be able to grow/produce atleast 80 percent of my families annual intake and be able to trade/barter for the rest. Someone please chime in if they wanna teach me how to use my pressure canner...

I wouldn't call myself a prepper but I was raised by a paranoid marine that was brought up during the great depression and in a household of 8 w/ only my mom working to feed us all. So, being frugal, self sufficient and reusing/repurposing all I can are ingrained into me. Plus, I'm all about being green and having a small carbon footprint while providing healthy, organic food to my family.

I found another lady that is here in Texas. Out near Bonham. I don't know if she will ship. Anyone want her contact info? She has a lot of breeds - including PARTRIDGE PENEDESENCAS. Guineas too.

He sells them straight run, so I would get at least two. He is driving to Plano (near me) Memorial weekend and said he would bring chicks. Not sure how much the OE's are. I think around $3-5. The lady near Bonham sells them for $5.

Hmmmm..... We have a 0% chance of rain today.

It is currently cloudy and thundering. There is also a band of rain moving this way.

I wish I had a job that I could be wrong almost 100% of the time and still get paid!

I have 8 Ameraucana chicks 6 weeks old fully feathered and ready for homes if anyone here would like them just let me know and someone may have them if they take all I can take pictures this evening we I get home from work.

Your baby needs buddies. Get at least 2 for him to hang with.

Why are you getting rid of them? Sadly, I'm at my limit with my current coop. Have to get my run built before I can get any more.

@Ms Jellybean ~ It looked like rain here this morning too. Cloudy and cool. Sun is out now, so should warm up for t-ball practice this afternoon.


I started work on my raised garden bed this morning. I only have a few cinder blocks to start with. I really just want to see what it will look like. Getting cinder blocks straight and level is a pain in the hiney!!
