Texas

Hey y'all! I am up in the Panhandle in Amarillo! Got my first chicks today. Mom brought my kids 4 unannounced so I was not prepared! But you know how we Texans can handle any situation! Gotta scramble and get some stuff to set up a brooder. I am not really a backyard chicken owner as I live in a rural area with 5 acres. I had planned on getting grown chickens because I want eggs now! Guess I will have to keep getting them from my neighbor for now! Bet this will light a fire under the hubby's rear to get that coop built! Lol

I have a friend that built a little incubator and incubated 2 homegrown eggs....there were apparently temp variations within the bator because they hatched 3 and 4 days late!!
so keep watching bator TV

Mine ran alittle low on thermometer on bottom anf thermometer on top was just right so I figure they may be a day or so late. But I rather them be late than have them be dead

Once I wrote an article at work about the 3 flags we hang outside the company. The custodian in charge of hanging the flags daily told me that there were times he accidently hung the TX flag upside down and people called in the company to report this. This was when he learned that the Red portion is Down as blood is always flowing down. I pointed out to him that we can easily observe the 5 corner star and know whether it's upside down or not.

We just picked up 6 turkey poults from our local feed store. We had 2 in our hatchery surprise assortment but only kept them for a week and sold them to someone who bought a number of our chicks.

The ones we picked up this morning are driving me CRAZY. They are loud, I can't seem to get a brooder temp that they like...Once I finally get it where they will be quiet, I've noticed a couple panting so I raise the heat a little and it gets crazy again. They don't huddle together, they don't move out from under the heat even when panting, they just fall asleep...

My thinking is, if I can't get them to a comfortable 'quiet' heat, then cooler is better...maybe not for my sanity...I really don't want them to overheat.

They are drinking, trying to drown themselves and not really interested in food unless I'm holding it in my hand and they accidently get some when trying to peck my ring...

I might go to TSC and see if they have any chicks left from Tuesday's shipment. The last thing we need is more chicks/chickens but the only thing I can think of that is making this time so much crazier than last time is that the poults really do learn from the chicks.

Any advice would be appreciated!
