Texas

TEXAS STRONG AND PROUD. I'm in a town inside of Houston called Bellaire. I'm new to chicken life but excited and ready to learn. I would like to know more about any Texas functions to attend and share info. Haha, I would mostly be listening right now. Is there a Texas group on here that chats and shares?

Hi from Katy!

Just a quick update for my Tx Peeps.
We built our own cooler bater.

This EE hen disappeared a while ago, but brought us back a present!
Your boy is so sweet looking! Love the baby chicks. Crazy that she could go missing and come back with babies!!! That never ceases to amaze me. Congrats on all the babies

Happy Good Friday!!! Got the garden all in. Always try and plant on good Friday. I am sooo tired. We used lots of plant paper and peat moss to maximize veggies and minimize water and weeds. Hatching like crazy here. Got 25 or so in the brooder. They are all my own eggs-Marans and Arkansas Blue roo x SBEL. I also had to cull a weak baby this morning. Heck of a way to start the day and I hate it but I also can't let them linger and suffer needlessly. Have lots more to do and another batch hatching in a few days. These out of the new foamabator. We will see how it does.
Why Good Friday? And what is "plant paper"? "New" to gardening for "real". Trying to learn. Sorry you lost a baby

Welcome!!!! This is the group, we are VERY chatty and share a ton! What kind of birds do you have or are looking to get?

RachealS- Good Friday is considered safe from frost planting in most of Texas. Deep S Texas has its own rules. We plant through a planting paper that discourages weed growth and helps keep moisture in the soil. We also cover that with peat moss. Water is a valuable commodity in this drought and to be conserved.

Hello from Austin

Can I join the Texas faction of Back Yard Chicken lovers??? I'm a Texas gal and I do love my poultry! I have 7 chickens (two Jersey Giant hens, one Silver Laced Wyndotte Hen, one Domonique hen, a bantam Bearded Belgium D'Anvers hen-- who is my favorite chicken in all the world-- an Egyptian mix rooster, and another cross bred (big) rooster). We also have two ducks (a very mean male "Black Runner" and a female White Pekin) and two Geese (they are babies, so I don't know the sex yet). Love to meet other chicken people!!!

Welcome!

So you put the peat moss on top, like some would use mulch? Water is super valuable to me, I am on a rain water system. Lived in Austin all my life and each year it just get worse and worse. There used to be underground springs near my moms house that always had soft green moss around them. They are long gone. We have "brooks" all around and I used to catch craw fish in them as a kid, now they only have water in them when it rains hard and long.
