Texas

Welcome to all the new people. :celebrate watch out cause you will fall into chicken math very fast. And Lisa always wants pic of the chicks even though she does not post many herself. The good news is chick days at TSC and Atwoods should be coming to a close so I can go there without picking up more chicks. My original Oder of chicks should be on its way next Monday which is 15 RIR pullets , 15 BR pullets ,and 6 dark Cornish roosters. That's all I was wanting for awhile until I got on this forum!! Now I already have 6 bantam EE, 6 bantam golden Sebright ,4 silkies, and 2 bantams that I am not sure of. So like I said watch out for the enablers.

A hot week coming up. Can't wait for the cold front next Tues, this is when I will make my last Spring shipment .... then sit back and relax enjoying TX summer.

I normally sell and ship my birds in March. But in late April there always be a shipping round to buyers from Alaska. Yes, Alaska.

I guess I missed you telling what birds you sell. So what kind do you sell and ship??

Thanks for all the welcomes everyone! And thanks for the quick advice regarding heat. I built my coop in the shade and the run will be fully shaded as well. I plan to put ice in the water and will offer a wading pool when the real heat hits. I just keep reading that chickens can tolerate bitter cold but that they can die from the heat quickly.

Can you good Texans please tell me, at what temps should I begin to offer ice in the water and a little wading pool? Thanks!

I wait until it is about 90-95 before I put ice bottles into their water. That's about the temp that the water gets too hot after a few hours and they won't drink it.

As for pools, ice bottles in the run, frozen fruit treats, etc - when summer first hits, I usually end up giving it to them sooner, like around 95-100* depending on their stress level. That's because they have been accustomed to the cooler temps and need time to get adjusted. But after we've had a few weeks of hot weather and they've adjusted, then I usually don't offer the extras beyond cold water in their water buckets, until it is over a100 - usually closer to about 105* or so.

Yeah, I've read quite a few articles on the wash/don't wash. I don't wash since leaving the bloom on the eggs keeps them fresher longer. Chicken poop hasn't killed me yet.

However, I read a blog post yesterday from yet another person that tried the experiment to see how long eggs lasted after being wiped down with mineral oil, and she got good results after having stored eggs for a year.

Thinking I'll continue to keep some eggs for more immediate use unwashed, but also keep some for long term storage - like during molting when they aren't laying well - and go ahead and wash eggs and then wipe them down with mineral oil.

Does anyone know where I can get EE pullets?? Not Bantams, and about 4 months old. I am not setup for chicks. If there are some breeders around the Houston/Conroe area, that would be ideal.

I have a chick that is 3 weeks old that can not stand or move around. She will eat and drink does not have diarrhea. I have isolated her from the others but she does not look well what do y'all think it could be
