David, please send the rain this way. The cracks in the ground are getting wider and wider and wider.

Thanks.  The dog we had to put down was a Blue Heeler.  She was 12.  Hubby had trained her to seek out snakes and have a special bark to alert us.  Glad to hear that your girl is still going and enjoying life!

The dog I had to put down right before Valentines day was a heeler. Had her nine years. She was my baby girl. Many memories...

We bought a used chicken coop with a little run with a very secure roost/nest box to lock up while they sleep. It is in a 6x8 chain link kennel which I wrapped in plasticware cloth netting attaching it to the chainlink with cabl. ties. We made an openable roof for the kennel from aluminum poles we had and covered in hardware cloth. We did it this way because we had limited funds and had to use what we already had and used stuff. It works out fine for 2-3 chickens, and I have a few chainlink panels I hook together for a temporary pen so they can get out in the grass while I clean the yard and coop. Ours can't be free range and coo has to be secure due to lots of dogs and wild predators. We are fencing an area by the yard for a future garden which they can get out into to scratch around, and building another coop from scrap wood we've collected so we can expand the flock.

I free range in my own yard. We went through the trouble of fencing in the front by the road. Now to do the rest in a few months.... We do have a nasy coyote problem out here and those suckers are not people shy at all

How can you tell the difference between ameracaunas and Easter eggers? I nearly bought some chicks being sold as amweacaunas but I think they were EE, all the chicks looked identical, brown with 2 black strips down their back. They were at a feed store who orders from Ideal Poultry.

It comes down to type, color, and comb. You could have a pure bred Am. And it'd be an ee if one of those things was off ... But also no hatchery has purebreds. They are all mixed mutts. Especially ideals birds.

I leave you people unsupervised for the weekend and come back to 234 new posts, a bunch of newbies (welcome all), Harley enabling chicken math and blaming Lisa, and Starfire single handedly whipping the male race.... hahaha It's looking to be a beautiful day which is a Catch 22 for me. I love this kind of weather, but it doesn't love me! ACHOO! Slow going on my chicken tractor because my 78 year old dad decided to give up the 5 bed 3 bath home (I've got 5 brothers) and move into a small 1 bed 1 bath house just 3 miles up the road from me. It will be good for him because he doesn't get around real well anymore but it's no small feat to sift through 40yrs of memories and belongings to whittle all that down to fit a tiny space. Well, I'm off to get some work done! Happy Monday folks and watch out for chicken math! Y'all are talking about MORE chickens and I'm still just attempting to get started. I'll never catch up! haha

What is this catching up you speak of? Haha! At least yoyr dad is closee to home now.

Yeah, umm my husband is 6ft 3. I am not pushing my luck that much! Besides, a woman has to pick the battles she can win, and in this case I can't so I surrendered to him. Kinda, I did still convince him to let me get the crested ducks after all. Maybe that counts as a draw?

Ok, I'll take that. But he still wont budge on the more chickens issue. lol. But I am getting 5 ducks! Yay.

I am 5'6" but he still makes me feel tiny. He ways I am vertically challenged and I say I need to cut him off at the ankles to bring him down to size.

Lisa, 2011 was a bad year for the whole state. Ranchers had ponds dry up to turn to dust. A lot of ranchers lost cattle and hay had to be brought in from other states. Wildfires were numerous all over. Had several not too far from me in Kennard and Groveton.

I am having a prescribed burn done on my property between now and end of May. They are cutting a twelve foot swath around my property line on my back 53 acres and will burn the understory to remove leaf litter and non native species of honeysuckle and sweet gum, just to name a couple!

It takes years for a property to recover from a wildfire. God used to do it naturally before man interfered!

Off my soapbox now. :)

David

How did my type get bold?
