Aussiegirl, do you possibly have a black copper maran? I have an ancona pullet I'll be willing to trade you. Or even a wheaten ameraucana or cream legbar?

I had 2 Silkies, 4 weeks younger than my big girls, and after an adjustment period, they got along fine.Question...do silkies require any special care or can they live with other chickens. The lady I mentioned some time back finally send me an e-mail. She has chicks, silkie, polish and others for sale. I tried to get her to come to the thread but not so far. I sent her another e-mail this morning so hoping to hear back. Silkies are suppose to be good brooders so DH wants a couple if they are easy to take care of.
Lookin' Good! Was a long day yesterday, but the chicken house now has a real roof. DH worked his tail off to finish it. No more rained on chickens. Now we have to fix the ground water issue with a ditch and gravel.
Before....November last year.
And as of yesterday. All we had to buy was 8 2x4 and two sheets of clear corrugated. We traded our cousin eggs for life and garden veggies for the 8 sheets of tin. It was used so had to flex seal the holes but hey the price was right.
Wish I was closer! I love Orpingtons..I wouldn't have anything to trade though, except $Would anyone near the San Antonio area be interested in a chicken swap? I have two extra black orpingtons from show lines that i dont need. They were born late March and I do have a picture of the sire.
Yes... been there done that! That's why we had to separate Becka when she was brooding. Have a nice size dog carrier/crate that worked very well for brooding. Once she was settled in it she did fine and no hens to load up her nest.I'm not sure if you've already had experience with broody chickens but one suggestion, if you are wanting a silkie for it to go broody, is to have an area ready or a plan for when it does go broody. We had an Easter Egger go broody and I wish I'd had a way to separate her, even an enclosed dog kennel. She kept getting out of her nest and letting the other hens lay more eggs. Her nest, and the 2 eggs we were letting her sit on for a 'trial' got nasty after about a week. We couldn't even incubate the eggs they were so dirty. It also got to be a pain collecting eggs and just not worth it all the way around. Of course, since my 2 attempts at incubating have been a failure, minus 1 chick that hatched, I'm wishing we would have given it a little more effort.
We've had a couple of silkies but never for long term. I love watching their fluffy butts run around. They don't appear to be the smartest of chickens and aren't very predator aware, so you might need to take extra precautions.

My large fowl are Buff Orpingtons, a Barred Rock, and Easter Eggers. My Barred Rock is the most aggressive.
I got rid of the cockerel, but kept the hen. She's my daughter's "constant" and will be more of a pet than a producer. But I also figured she'd pull her weight in the broody dept. Hopefully that wasn't bred out of her in the hatchery. A well bred Silkie might be a better broody.
They are DEFINATELY no the brightest birds...at least in my limited experience, but mine aren't/weren't aggressive in the slightest. Even the young cockerel.
My EE cockerel started getting testy around 8 weeks..you now, just doing his job. But the Silkie was always very sweet and laid back. He deffered to the top hen lol. Oh! and my Silkie is also one of my louder chickens...actually, probably my loudest. If she thinks something isn't to her liking, she'll let you know!
