But the three remaining ducks are coming around finally, and they're starting to be happier and not quite as nervous. I feel really bad for them, because they had to witness it. I'm not surprised they spent most of these past few weeks in their run, away from the scenes of the crimes. Even though it'll be a huge change for them, I think they'll be much happier when we move. And I'm definitely going to make sure they are well protected.

Those of you with young hens who are looking for a good Roo for them, do you have to have a Roo now? If not, why not wait until the young hens are closer to a year old, and then get a Roo for them? That way, they will be older, and can teach the Roo some manners when he gets too "excited".

It seems like it would be easier to end up with a good Roo when you  have older, more experienced hens to teach him a thing or two.    Just something I've picked up from reading here on BYC. Not from personal experience, mine are only 12 & 13 weeks old now. I did not want a Roo with my first batch of chicks, for this reason.  

I am not going to go straight out and buy a Roo right now, for several reasons. But I had wanted a Roo that could mature with the flock so the 2 Roos wouldn't fight as much. I read somewhere that Roos who are raised together are less violent than 2 Roos who are mature at introduction. And by less violent I mean they won't kill each other, but they will give each other a good beating every now and then over a favorite hen though. I plan on looking around and waitin till my ladies mature, the 2nd Roo maybe younger than the ladies so that he can be taught manners and so Screwball can get used to him while he is young.

Thanks. I have a feeling I am going to need it. I don't know where I'd get a good healthy Roo from. I am worried about bio security so I have to be careful where I get 1 from. And I do NOT want to brood more chicks right now. I'd need a chick at least off heat, but preferably older or close in age to my 16 week old pullets. Just not with the attitudes the SLWs and RIR that I just served for dinner had. Those guys were viscious and hurt my ladies. First 1 of the SLWs poked my hen's eye, then the RIR grabbed my 5 week old gosling and tried to mate her, twice! no, I need a good solid Roo for my girls, not phsycos. Just don't know where too look.

Anyone have muscovie ducks they want to trade? I have a chocolate drake that I would like to trade for a chocolate or blue hen, and two blue drakes that I would like to trade for two blue or lavender hens. I'm in del valle, tx. I have way too many drakes and not enough girls. 4 drakes, 4 hens. I'm not sure what the ratio should be for them, but I know thats not close to it.

The books I've read say 7 hens to1 Drake.

yeah sorry about taking so long to get back to you we can't take the drake with my grams dumping a sick rooster on me my parents said it was a definite no.

Here is Ebony and the ducklings enjoying some outside time today. Ebony finally is putting her whole foot down when she walks. She is still limping badly, but she was tippy-toe limping on the injured foot. So the fact that she is putting her foot flat now is a good thing,or I choose to think it is.

She looks great with those ducklings!

A lot has changed Belott. Umm quick recap for my place. Got 5 ducks, the drake forced the smallest to mate and tore her hip muscles. Re-homed the drake with his favorite female. Purchased 4 Cayuga ducklings, 1 male, 3 female. They keep my injured duck Ebony company while she recovers. She is making progress, 10 days ago she couldnt put any weight on her foot, today she has her foot flat on the ground. Still limping but showing improvement. Got a new head rooster, named Screwball. Heis a black Austrolorps X white Leghorn mix. Butchered 4 cockerels 3 SLW and 1 RIR for damaging my favorite BR hen's eye. Brother in law picked up his 3 pullets I brooded for him as his b-day present. So I went from 32 chickens to 25 chickens. I'm going the wrong way on chicken math.

My oldest geese are a pair and practicing mating behavior at 16 weeks old! Got my 2nd coop partially up and running and the chickens moved in. Just finished repairing all the damage from the major storm we had where lightning struck my house.

major update for all about my neighbor whose house burned down Easter Sunday!

Did a interview with Fox news. A lady that knew him as a child got in touch and she works at a company that helps in cases like this. She got them involved and now we have several companies all pitching in to help. The house has already been leveled and removed. They are laying down pads for his donated 3 bedroom trailer that comes in late next week. They are hooking all his utilities back up for him AND they are going to till his garden, bring in some topsoil and some trees to replace what was knocked down to remove the remains of the house. Oh and they are building him a 6 foot wooden privacy fence too. All of this for free.

That is great news! Glad your neighbor is getting the help he needs...and then some!
