Can anyone tell me how to keep chicken snakes away? I have my cochin chicks and several other breeds of chicks in cages on the back deck, all feathered and a chicken snake got in one of the pens and ate 4 of my smallest black cochin chicks :( And he got a bullet!! It was 4 1/2 feet long, and about made me have a stroke!! We have Cats (Barn/Wild), dogs, road runners, Game Roosters & Chickens running loose. Just makes me sick loosing my babies! :he
1/2 inch hardware cloth completely surrounding your cages is the only thing that will stop a Rat Snake. I shot a six footer yesterday afternoon one third the way up a sixteen foot aluminum pole going for baby Martins. It is currently hanging on a limb in the burn pile. ;) David

Anyone know what this is??
Its kind of the same color of Pearl's eggs, but its EXTREMELY soft and it has that weird string..
is it a snake egg?
I just didnt know if I should be concerned about any deficiencies in their diets. They get crushed shells for calcium and free range along with layer pellets and about 1 treat a day

sadly hardware cloth is the only way. I have even heard stories of them climbing up 2 story buildings. I am so sorry for your loss.

I think you should go to 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch mesh hardware cloth to keep out snakes, rats, mice, weasels, and other skinny vermin. It should be on all sides and the bottom, unless you have a solid bottom or top. I see you have a wood bottom which should work unless it has holes. Good luck and I have simular problems outside of Lampasas. I lost 5 chicks before I got racoon proofed. (One racoon pulled off a1x4 attached with 4, 1 1/2" wood screws but he didn't get through the hardware cloth!)

If I didn't live so far away, I could build you some panels that will keep snakes out. Here's a pic of one.

It kinda looks like a snake egg, but my guess would be a fairy/softshell. We get them occasionally. Stress among other things cause it. Just keep on doing what you are doing as far as feed and treats. I read somewhere that they can get stressed from just the change in weather/temp. Hope this helps.
