My quail laid 3-4 soft eggs just like that before she got the hang of it
Anyone know what this is??
Its kind of the same color of Pearl's eggs, but its EXTREMELY soft and it has that weird string..
is it a snake egg?
I just didnt know if I should be concerned about any deficiencies in their diets. They get crushed shells for calcium and free range along with layer pellets and about 1 treat a day

I think you should go to 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch mesh hardware cloth to keep out snakes, rats, mice, weasels, and other skinny vermin. It should be on all sides and the bottom, unless you have a solid bottom or top. I see you have a wood bottom which should work unless it has holes. Good luck and I have simular problems outside of Lampasas. I lost 5 chicks before I got racoon proofed. (One racoon pulled off a1x4 attached with 4, 1 1/2" wood screws but he didn't get through the hardware cloth!)

Thanks for the info...I have seen a snake here in 7 years, and now within weeks 2 of them. First one didnt get no babies just a bullet.
And the 2nd one got 4 of my black cochin chicks :(

If I had a better idea of where you live, I think I could tell you a little more about where to get poults. Sometimes, if you find someone locally, you can get some BBW or BBB poults for about the same price as a hatchery but you won't have to order a minimum. Sometimes it just takes a little more searching. I know I have to look on different places like Facebook or Craigslist to find specific birds. If you try and hatch turkey eggs now, you will likely still have a decently sized turkey by the time Thanksgiving comes around, but it is cutting it just a bit close.

grand prairie it's right next to dallas

i had gotten this first batch of Natt turkey eggs from a breeder in GE but i didn't tell them about the BYC egg shipping standard because i assumed everyone did it. they Not only sent them on a Thursday but in egg cartons and not bubble wrapped one was actually broken in the box upon arrival. And i don't have high hopes for the 2 hatch worthy eggs in my incubator as it was hot as hell the weekend they spent in the post-office.
