I was clipping wing feathers, tonight, and noticed Frank Peeper's (approx. 14wks old) tail feathers aren't rounded & uniform like her sisters' (and all our other pullets/hens)...could be pecking from her flock mates, or she could be a roo. What do ya'll think?

PS: this was the 1st time I'd seen Frank Peepers stand up straight like this.

it really makes me mad it's why i didn't want to keep them in the first place i wanted one good rooster for chicks but i raised unsexed chicks and literlly a few hours from killing the extras, my dad acts like i'm going to skin one of the cats and throws a three year old tantrum saying that i can't kill something i raised like he really thinks he has a say in what happends to the birds he doesn't help at all

But not knowing what 3 week old pullets are worth, I want to ask the others on this thread what they believe is a fair value on them.

I don't know about 3 week old pullet pricing, but when I got our (then) 10wk old pullets we paid $5 per bird. To be honest, that seemed low to me, but I didn't argue.

Haha I have little barred rocks though and I'm keeping a trio, but a lady wanted to trade me a pullet and a rooster for another rooster that's about 10 months old..as much as I love roosters I already have a rooster that was given to me who is doing great, plus have a bunch of packing peanuts from Ideal. I was luck enough to get two pullets out of those.

I am so looking forward to the cold front! It has been so miserable to sit outside with my hens, not to mention I can see how hot they are!

On a separate note, does anyone here bathe their chickens?

I have done an Epsom salt soak, and foot scrubs but not full scrubs. I need a hairdryer to dry them.
My silkie girl needs a good sudsing up though. They've been playing in the mud to keep cool.

I hate Texas weather, I don't believe in "future" cold fronts lol. I believe them when I feel them haha. Born & raised in California, & being out here in Houston for about 3 years I've learned to 1) never believe the weather man 2) just because there's lots of thunder & lightening it doesn't mean it's going to rain 3) that Texas' mother nature is going thru menopause with her hot flashes & moodiness. Did I mention I hate Texas weather? Lol. I won't even go into the skeeters topic. When people say "everything is bigger in Texas" I joke around & say "the only things bigger are the skeeters & roaches"

I'm from The Woodlands/Conroe (No chickens there though at least in the woodlands)

I have lives in Texas my entire life and I hate the weather to death, and yes, the roaches and the mosquitoes are huge here. e_e I am terrified of roaches... and when I tore down my old coop, guess what was living underneath along with that momma rat that was killing my chicks; tons of roaches! nibbling off my chickens poo. I had to have my husband bag up the bedding. I was too terrified to try and pick it up.

I have my araucana hen who has a constant problem with getting poop stuck to her butt, I have ended up just plucking out feathers. I dunno why she has this problem. My fluffier chickens don't.

But I was just wondering if the tea tree oil would be good for them at all. I heard it is great for skin and hair, but i dunno about feathers.

I read something recently about jello(sugar free) being good for them, but I bet you could do any type of gelatin. Sounds awful, but I bet some really rich bone broth would do the trick..plus we're coming up on winter. It could be a treat!

Man... if my husband told me he didn't like my chickens any more I would tell him tuff tookie! You knew what you got into when you married me haha! I wish I had the room for 50 hens!

I mad my new chicken coop off the ground so the boogers don't have anywhere to really bunker down. There is hay in the bottom of my coop, but the girls dig through it during the day occasionally so i don't think many bugs will stick around. I also use DE in the run, I never had the roaches crawling around in the run, I might try and sprinkle some in the house next time I get a bottle as well!

I thought about that. I had a bottle of it and it disappeared somewhere over the rainbow. The stuff worked when I had my baby chicks a couple of years ago for pasty butt.

That makes no sense at all haha! Oh well. I am just gonna stick to sprinkling it dry everywhere. I wonder why they say it doesn't work when wet... because I heard of making a white wash with it.


Gah! My ladies dumped almost their entire feeder of food. They are going to have to eat off the ground for a few days. I am not going to feel sorry for them when that feeder is empty.

Mine have done that, then they DID eat it off the ground. Now I just feed them in a shallow pan every morning. Only have 3 left out there anyway :/

well i have some good new and some bad news good news first my bantam hen Watson layed her first egg today

now the bad news when i was at school the multiple roosters in my coop attacked her and now she can't stand up or walk normally i hope it is only rape damage but she is using her wings to move around i so hope she didn't break her leg my first hen to lay and she gets taken out by her kin

i hate those roosters 3 of them are going to go "missing" tomorrow morning. i'm to angry to eat them they will go to my corn patch

While i am very sad my hen got hurt I'm kid of glad she got hurt to prove a point to my dad. keeping extra roosters is a bad thing!! they where raised with though it's sad it took a hen getting hurt to drive the point home
