I don't know I wanna show bantam cochins and I'm looking at the state fair this coming year...how do you guys join APA?

They are to me but recently the male has become very protective towards me so hisses at everyone else.

I really like the welsh harlequins, they were one of the breeds I was looking at. Did you just not want any males?

I live in the suburbs and don't have room for that many ducks to keep both my boys. We got them for eggs and as a straight run. I just don't see eggs coming from boys but a coworker of my husbands has them and I get updates on how they are doing. This time I made sure to get females and ordered them.

Competition is even more fierce with bantams, because more folks seem to keep and breed them. You'll definitely want to get familiar with the Standard for your breed. This year at the State Fair, there were far more bantams shown than large fowl. It is a sanctioned show, so its judges are familiar with,and judge, according to the SOP. You may also want to look into the American Bantam Association. http://www.bantamclub.com/aba/

Awesome info! I kinda reckoned the bantams would be more popular, especially with kids I figure. Do people just not like large fowl? I like large fowl myself but I like the compactness of a bantam. If I could find a more docile version of leghorns in a bantam size that would be nice. By the way, are there any breeds you have seen that are really common?

There are large fowl and bantam Leghorns. A good number of large fowl have bantam counterparts.

Ohh ok. Hm I never knew there could be a leghorn bantam these days, because someone had told me there was such a thing but it never caught on. I do know a lot of breeds can come in bantam or normal sized, but I never knew about the leghorn.

Most people that I know want Leghorns for egg production, so they don't want tiny eggs from a bantam. It's more a fancier's bird rather than for someone that wants them for their utility purpose in addition to exhibiting them., but I've seen them around. There are Standards for bantams that are very rare or don't exist though, like my Javas.

Showing can be fun and all, but it can also be very stressful depending on what you're showing. When I was showing Aussies it was soooo much easier to keep those bug ole hens clean and pretty than it was to do the Hamburgs.

I figure fancy breeds like Polish and silkies and such are even harder.

It's definitely worth getting into with the kids.
