If he doesn't find any by May, he might make a trip down to Conroe Trade Days at Montgomery County Fairgrounds--usually the first Sunday in May & October.

Have they put out the schedule yet? That would seem to be a good time for the family,.

It's normally the 1st Sundays in May & October, but I'll be sure to post on here if/when I find out for sure. Good family outing--lots of things to see or buy. Some times are better than others, as far as how many vendors are there & what they have for sale. We usually try to go even if we're not in the market for anything, & sometimes we sell.

My 4 year old Buff Orpington, Miss Priss has gone broody for really the first time. I feel bad that I can't slip some chicks under her. My limit is 3 hens. Maybe she will snap out of it. She must be tired of being at the top of the pecking order and just wants to be a Momma.

Broody hens can quickly lose body mass, and when it is warm weather they can become dehydrated and die if they are broody. If they aren't going to set eggs, putting them into a broody breaker cage can break their broodines more quickly to help prevent them from becoming deconditioned.

So, I am getting 20 peeps from Ideal next week and as I was setting up my brooder, I started thinking about the bedding. I've always used shavings and get tired of the constant changing of the bedding to keep the smell down. I use deep litter in the coops and it doesn't smell much out there - just a bit musty. So, my question - has anyone used dirt for their chick bedding instead of shavings? Pros? Cons?

I have just used the fine pine shavings. I elevate the chick water so they don't kick as much into it as that tends to be what gets everything wet and stinky.

I have the brite tap fittings for the adults and love love love it. They had not trouble using it and it keeps things dry and water clean.

I was at Livengood Feed in Tomball yesterday and they have put in their order for chicks from Ideal. They were getting a great assortment of breeds...silkies, cochins, marans, welsumers, barndevelders. Lots of backyard eye candy. Ideal will be putting those in their incubator special for them.

I am wanting to hatch in the Easter Hatch-a-long. I would love to hatch some now stock for my flock.
Does anyone here have hatching eggs of pure,
Isbar
Black Australorp
Jubilee Orp
Buff Leghorn
Gold laced Wyandotte
Sebrights
And maybe a few Silkies for my niece
