Ok thank you so much. I checked out thier website and $19.00 sounds much better than the $40.00
Even with the drive it would probably still save quite a bit. I just hope gas prices stay low till early June. I have a major gas gussler!
Also just wanted to ask one more question.
I am thinking about getting some quail this summer. Does anyone know a contact to get a small amount of quail from? Small meaning 10-20. Most of the hatcheries make you buy 50 or more.
I am also not real sure about getting day old chicks considering I have never had them.
I try to stay away from chicks in general, since I have 3 kids who love to hold them constantly, and probably end up stressing them out and killing them.

This place also have quail. He sells them frequently throughout the year. I'd just give a call before you make the trip and see what they have available. Adult quail usually run for about $5 for females and sometimes he has the males for $2 (when the supply is large and they outnumber the females).

Quail chicks are tiny, so I can see why you'd be concerned. Children holding them might accidentally crush them because they are about the size of a quarter when they are a day old. Super small!

Anyway, just talk to the lady or her husband and they'll let you know what's going on and what they have. They are also open everyday of the week from 8 AM - 8 PM. Even Sundays!

Now, what I wanna know is why your hen prices locally are so high. $40 for a hen? That's pretty excessive. I sell my game hens for $15 when they are young layers and my larger breeds (Australorps) for $20. I wouldn't dream of selling them for $40 each unless they were some special breed or purebred breeding quality birds.

My new little cream legbar chicks. I guess I am going to have to be their mommy. I have always let a broody hen raise a few chicks, but this time I got the chicks and do not have a broody hen. What was I thinking. :) I can do this.

I agree. I find building anything for the chickens is a lot of work. I just made a new set of nests. I only built four, all in one section, but it was a lot of work. I had to tear apart some pallets to get the wood. I think that was more of a job than building the nests.

Yep! I hope to get some this year or early next year at the latest. I put my chicks outside the day I got them last year. It was the first week of March. I kept them for 2 weeks in my DH's shop, then put them out in the brooder which was in the coop. I kept the Premier heat plate on them and they did great.
