What are the best plants and flowers to grow for my chickens to eat

You and I think alike! Someone here at BYC recommended the website fresheggsdaily, which has a lot of gardening suggestions for both humans and chickens. There is a section called "Plant an Edible Flower Garden for your Chickens" and a video series called, "Herbs for Hens".

I have planted the following in a small raised garden on top of the brooding coop:
- mint (a few varieties)
- oregano
- lavender
- basil (two varieties)
- strawberries
- wheat grass
- catnip

Interestingly enough, when I put the chicks up there, they really love to nibble on the lavender, catnip, and strawberries (of course!). On the ground I currently have some yarrow and citronella plants. This year I plan on putting in rosemary, echinacea, and marigolds too.

I am in the lake Arlington area of ft worth. We just moved. I was very surprised that I have yet to own a white egg layer. All my girls lay brown, one green, and my Rhode island almost laus chocolate strangely haha. So I have an order of salmon faverolles coming from a hatchery, and a turken, but yet again no white egg layers. So I was testing my luck. I picked up some chicks a month ago from the bantam bin because I wanted Silkies. They of course only had one and I was required to buy six, needless to say I have three old English bntams who will be looking for a home most likely, and I think a white Cochin cockerel.

How long till you think your pullets might start to lay? I have no idea how long my sweet Yumyum will be broody. She hatched me 10 chicks last year And was a good mom.

Only the silkies are laying and I don't have a rooster right now. The other chicks were hatched this year (in Feb) and it will be a few months before they lay-although the polish may be a rooster...and the polish was the only one I was hoping to get white eggs from!

The reason I was holding off on the rooster was to see if any of these pullets turned out to be roos after all--last year most of my straight-runs ended up being roosters. Unfortunately, a raccoon attack wiped out my roos.

How old are the chicks you picked up? Are the three OEB all roos? I have heard that cochin make sweet roos!

I think the black one is a rooster for sure. His comb is very distinct. I originally had another white cochim that was feathering in faster that I assumed was female. my heat bulb went out while I was at work and she got smothered.

Might have a buff rooster to trade
waiting to see how many total roosters I have, but I can see this guy's wattle coming in and his comb is dark

If I was closer to you, I would take them in a heartbeat! They are my favorite breed and I have a hatchery order of some coming in. I was searching forever for some and gave up and bought from mc murray
