Texas

It was a guinea egg. I had pulled out 4 of the guineas that I believe to be female and put 2 in with the pullets and 2 in with the old hens. I don't have the guineas banded, so I can't easily tell them apart. I am sure that they switch coops though. First egg was in the pullet coop, found a second in the hen coop this morning. Slightly larger and better color conformation.

Karma came home today. He seemed okay with everything except the cats. He barked at one of my barn cats after she swatted him on the nose. My older dog and karma scuffled over dominance. Growling and some jaw slapping but no teeth.

He ignored the chickens and horses though. Followed me all evening doing chores. He's drugged back up on pain killers now, to much activity fresh after neutering I think. Aside from needing weight and a few manners he will do great.

German shepherds are such great dogs. :) how did you get him to not chase the chicks? Mine will leave my ladies alone if I am outside, but if I am not then it is chicken dinner >(

the 5 shepherd pups I have left. I really want to keep one. They are so sweet.

I am thinking of changing out my flock. I really want to get a select breed, and maybe a few good egg layers. I am debating on if I want salmon faverolles, quail danvers, or red shoulder yokohamas, what do you guys think would be best? I would probably keep one roo and 6 hens of that breed, and then 5 good egg laying breeds like leghorns, minorcas, etc. Though to be honest I really do like the look of the brown leghorn as well.

I had a Muscovy duck that was sitting on 22 eggs for about 10 days when one of our Australorp hens ran her off the nest and started sitting on the eggs. I have taken her off the eggs three days in a row and let the duck back on them and she goes and runs the duck off the eggs and is back sitting on them.  I guess I will let her sit and see what happens.  ET:rolleyes:

Split them up. Put a few on a nest for the hen. That way they both get to set. I will add I have never tried it. It is so hot. I did try and let a broody hen set fertilized eggs in heat like this and they did not hatch.

Are you selling your GS puppies? Do you have a girl?

We're over sorta between Terrell/Kaufman. Had no idea that they had a grain mill in Greenville. Like to go up there periodically and get things at Atwoods that I can't get here. Will have to check out that grain mill sometime.
They sell some of the grain mill (North Texas Farmers Coop) products at the farm feedstore in Canton also. Can't remember the name of the road its on but its the one on the south side that comes out of Kaufman (just before the intersection on the southwest corner) which would be closer to you. Sabine Valley Feeds...just checked and looks like they only sell layer mash, milo, wheat, corn chops and scratch grains. http://www.netfc.com/poultry_feeds.html

Those puppies are so cute! I've dedicated my adult hood on rescues. When Karma is gone, another will eventually find forever with us. I'm fond of adopting seniors in their last days. Usually though, dogs adopt us. I found him by sheer miracle. He is a good dog by luck.

I'm guessing whomever lost him / let him out / discarded him had poultry. It's the only logic I have as to why he doesn't bother them. In my experience, GSDs can and will kill chickens. It's nature. I've never had one that completely ignores cats, either. Our last four were cat killers. Four generation cat killers. My grandparents used to breed them. My aunt still does. Maybe one day I'll get one from her. They're very well bred, when she breeds.

Sounds about right. My male used to leave the chicks a alone tilll I got my female, then she taught him how delicious they were. Our female leaves the cats alone whereas my male will chase them and hit them hard with his nose. I hope that my next pup I can work with well and teach him to guard the chickens instead of eat them haha. Once I get a house I hope to welcome my home to fostering German shepherds for a rescue my friend works with, but until I get into my own house I have to wait. :(
