I am in South Texas near Corpus Christi, Texas. I am a victim of chicken math. We are now trying to build another coop. I already have one, but since I decided to venture into incubating eggs. I need more room. Somehow, it went from 3 to 6 to 12 to 18 and it just keeps going. Oh well, the whole family is loving my addiction. So hello, fellow Texans. Has anyone ordered from Ideal Poultry? I am really wanting a frizzled Cochin. Notice wanting...not needing. We tried Texas Naturals, but kept getting weevils in it. (Was coming that way from feed store) I don't think the feed is bad, maybe just storage problems at the store we were using. So we switched to another feed bought at another store.

Welcome from West Central Texas. Sorry about the chicken math thing. It is an insidious disease for which there is no known treatment at this time. I was going to get 5 hens for eggs for us and...well, my sig file below says it all...and I am not finished yet. About half of my birds, all my Cayugas and all my Bantams are from Ideal. They are very reasonably priced, ship locally really fast (mine used to come overnight until they closed the PO sorting station in Abilene now they go to Houston then back up to us) Small shipments, especially during the winter months, will result in so called packing peanuts (free males) for body warmth so plan on dealing with some roosters. But they are at least half as expensive as others. Good luck with you new "hobby".

We are expanding due to necessity. Well. My husband is officially a victim of chicken math. He has breeds he wants. More coops for me!!!!

There are so many breeds I would like to have as "hobby" birds but they all tend to be flighty (Egyptian Fayoumi) or they need really high perch areas due to long tails (Onagadori and other Oriental breeds). So, until I can build specially adapted coops...

Thanks for the welcome. Yep, I have caught the chicken bug. I think I may have a rooster, but not sure. My children wanted some out of the bantam straight run pen. They got two. One is a sultan that is a female, the other looks like a mottled Cochin. It was an assorted pen.
The Cochin has a really red comb and wattles. Only 8 weeks old. However, someone said females can have a really red comb and wattles. It hasn't been trying to crow, so no clue.

Mine is looking dry. We always mist our chickens during the heat of the day, and I believe it makes the bug go to their run so they can eat the bugs. It is nice and green there, but I do believe I will have to start watering a little bit. It is hard to believe since we had so much rain down here on the coast and had to detour sometimes due to flooding roads.

We run the mister from 1 p.m. til about 7, and it really helps. I agree about the bugs.I keep the fan on in the coop from mid-morning until bedtime. I need to get a shallow pan for them to stand in.

Mine too. I bet if I put a picture of it up and asked random people to guess where I am, they would guess Arizona or Utah.

I know, just 2 months ago everyone in Texas was begging for the rain to stop. Now we want it back. Also, that is a good idea. Bugs for chickens is about the one good thing about drought and heat!

We need to start running it too. Only issue is that it's too hot to go outside for even 1 minute! Well maybe I'm over - exaggerating but thats what it feels like sadly.
