Texas

Hi from north Texas! I joined awhile back and then was MIA for a bit...now I'm back! I just posted a new introduction on the newbie intro forum. :)

Welcome back! Congrats on the new additions. I love Chick Days at the feed stores. Would like to add a few also but exercising judgement here with 11 stealth hens. The local feed stores have had some great varieties Orps, Welsummers, EEs Brahma, and other production birds. Nice to see them enabling with some great breeds!
Got to do a coop cleanup this weekend - weather will be perfect.

Well, my birds passed being tested. Apparently, he liked my coops because he could stand up in them. Now, the animal commission is going to come out to do a head count, and then on to NPIP.

Chick Days at TSC are a great time to get good discounts on some feeders and waterers, and other supplies, too.

Absolutely! And if you're not signed up for their email list, do so! I get great coupons emailed to me and they just scan it on my phone in the store (or you can print them)

I need to resist going in there right now because chicks arrived at ours about a week and a half ago and I'm currently waiting on my order from Meyer lol...

TAHC has to come out and count them? They never told me that when I asked for the information about getting NPIP last year. Why do they need to come count them?

I don't know. My wife was here with TAMU, and he said that was the next step.

I'll be interested to hear about your experience and what they do for this. TAHC does a lot of b.s. stuff because they get heavily lobbied by the commercial poultry/Big Ag interests and they're making all these stupid nitpicky regulations to try to mess with the small people. It's just getting a bit ridiculous with all the hoops they keep wanting people to jump through - especially when they keep trying to get regulations passed to be able to track everybody's animals.

Hello fellow Texans I'm in the Cedar Creek area. New to chickens. Having fun learning more about them. Is there any breeders around here were I can get some more and some turkeys and geese's?
Hello Cedar Creek. I'm in Red Rock. What kind of chickens are you looking for?

Hello from Gilmer, Texas. We love living in East Texas and just got our 1st 4 Barred Rock chicks last week. I am wanting to get some more already, I hear having chickens are like potato chips, you always want more than just 1, lol! Anyone else on this thread close to us?

Some of our first chickens were BR and they are the sweetest.

CONGRATS!

I made the mistake of going to TSC for dogfood yesterday. Chicks and Ducks galore. If I would not have had to leave them in the car all day they would all be here now. Have to avoid TSC for a while I guess.
O WOW... I was wondering this:)

Hi! I, too, live in San Marcos and am interested in buying a couple of chickens. I am new to this and am curious what exactly would I need other than a coop, brooder, and chicken feed? Is there a breed that you know of that does well in the crazy Texas weather and is good with children? About how much are start-up costs and do you know a place here or near here where I can get everything? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!
