Hi! I'm new to chickens and Texas in general. I'm currently in El Paso. And so far I have 3 hens, 1 Rooster and 2 ducklings.

Hi! I, too, live in San Marcos and am interested in buying a couple of chickens. I am new to this and am curious what exactly would I need other than a coop, brooder, and chicken feed? Is there a breed that you know of that does well in the crazy Texas weather and is good with children? About how much are start-up costs and do you know a place here or near here where I can get everything? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

Check out on Facebook a place called "Cen Tex Farm Fresh Eggs, Chicks, Chickens & Poultry accessories". This a Facebook page with individuals in the central Texas area that sell chickens/supplies. You might find the birds you are looking for from an individual. They have a portion of the page that deals with things people are selling. Good luck!

predator proof chicken coop, water. We have Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers and Brown Leghorns and just recently, Buff and Lavender Orpingtons. They all seem to do ok in Texas weather. I think Barred Rocks and Orpingtons are very calm and friendly birds. You can get everything you need at Tractor Supply. Good luck getting started. I've got two Easter eggers (hen and rooster) and 2 game hens... And the ducklings I put up a query post about what kind of ducklings mine might be and they may be magpies

Welcome to the new folks! I've had/have Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, Silver Laced Wyandottes, and now Icelandics... They all do well in Tx weather. As far as temperament goes, the BRs have been the most calm and friendly birds. As for supplies, many of us DIY if you're into that. There's lots of great examples here on BYC.

Ditto. The only breeds that I have/had and won't again are Andalusians. Like many Mediterranean breeds they do tend to be a bit aggressive. Pretty birds and large white eggs but nasty attitudes.
