Texas

Howdy all you chicken people in Texas, just reporting in from Livingston, Texas with my brand new flock of chicks and ducklings and their "momma" (me) a brand new chicken owner. Lots to learn here but having fun so far.
Any good advice  or information gladly accepted.

Welcome to BYC.
We love pics, don't be afraid to ask questions. Have fun with your chickens. They are wonderful therapy.

Hi all,

I had my first chicken casualty this weekend.  My little Edith was fine on Thursday (free-ranging and dirt-bathing and bug-eating) but Friday she couldn't walk very well and was very lethargic.  I was fortunate to find a vet here who would see her Friday afternoon and he prescribed an antibiotic because he said he could hear lung sounds and usually you couldn't in birds.  No impacted crop, no signs of being egg-bound, no respiratory signs such as sneezing or coughing or mucus.  He said she might just have had some infection that traveled to her lungs.  We gave her the medicine Friday and Saturday but she died on Sunday.  I know this is old hat to some of you long-time chicken owners, but I have had chickens for a little less than a year, and I'm sad about it. The vet said that birds sometimes act fine until they're really sick and then it's hard to bring them back to health.  But I do wish I had noticed something earlier so I could have given her a better chance.

All my other birds seem to be fine, but I will be checking them often and watching them closely for the time being.

That's all.  Just wanted to tell folks who would understand.

Sorry for your loss. It's never easy.If you ever lose one to a predator the guilt you feel is awful.

I forget who wanted Blue Americanas but I have 5 eggs in the incubator this go around along with another hatching of Chocolate Orpingtons. It has been a long day.

What do you charge for chicks?
At the moment 13.00 a chick and they are NPIP and TAHC certified and copies can be provided if you would like copies. Also, I am happy to provide extras for local pick up. You and I live in the same town. So, I am always happy to provide extras on pick up. I have plenty of Chocolate Opringtons at the moment to choose from. I have 12 that just finished their egg sack and are on chick feed and I have four that are older and have started to feather. I also have a French Black Copper Maran that is a couple weeks old and obviously a rooster by his comb. Of the four that have started to feather I am pretty sure one of the Orpingtons is male as he is growing his comb. So, if you wanted to start a Chocolate Oprington flock, I have enough to get you started.

If you like to incubate I have Chocolate Oprington and Black Copper Maran hatching eggs. If not, I am not opposed to running a special hatch. That is why I am putting 5 Blue Americana eggs in this hatch. I was considering after this hatch running a Black Copper Maran hatch.

PM me and let me know.

I'm sorry to hear of the losses people have experienced. It doesn't matter how long you've been doing this, it's still hard to find one of your critters gone, especially with no advanced warning. Unfortunately, that's part of it though. I've recently started with a batch of Coturnix quail and experienced heavy losses starting out. It's quite disheartening. Hang in there guys and gals.
