May have to rethink this whole chicken thing!!!

Anyway my name is Wyndi. My husband and I are in the process of moving to the wonderful state of Texas and I am literally BESIDE myself with excitement! This move has been 2.5 years in the making and I can finally say I'll be there soon!! YAY!!!

Hubby's office will be in Plano but we're looking either east of there (McKinney, Murphy, Parker, Lucas) or out in Colleyville. I've done research trying to figure out what cities are not BYC friendly and so far have only found Plano and Farmers Branch to be flat out no's. Others have a limit on how many you can have. Are there are there any others we should be aware of? Been waiting a LONG time for this and would hate to fall in love with a house only to find out I can't have girls!

Soooo what's the deal with snakes? How often do you find them in your coop and is there any way to prevent them from getting in? I might seriously have a heart attack if I find one of those things in my coop!!

Look forward to getting to know all of you and sharing the flock adventures!

Wyndi

WELCOME TO TEXAS! I hope you can stand the heat! lol
For me personally I don't have the snake problem, but I live in the city. My mom lives in a "country" area just outside go Houston and snakes are regular visitors.
It all depends on where you live, don't let the snakes scare you a good shovel near by can always fix that problem.

Haha! There is no shovel with a handle long enough for me to get near a snake! They give me the willeys even on TV or pictures on the computer screen! Yikes!

If heat means I don't have to pay "sunshine taxes" in Cali any more then I'm all for it! I grew up in Kansas and am DEFINITELY NOT a Cali gal! I'm ready for seasons, breathing room and wide open roads (I won't even mind the construction). My greyhounds won't appreciate the cold they have to look forward to but they'll get over it!

Don't mean to scare you even more, but there are a lot of predators in Texas. You can prevent most of them by building a solid and secure coop. Snakes are the most difficult predator for me. They can get through the tiniest of cracks.
The small hardware cloth is your best prevention against snakes. And the bird netting as shown in an earlier post will stop them in their tracks.

Good luck finding a house the is BYC friendly and have a safe trip here.

Welcome to Texas and BYC!
I have always been told to wait 5 minutes if you don't like the weather, it will change. Sometimes it seems we see all four seasons in a week, I think it is one of the great things about Texas.
And being in the Dallas area I am not sure how bad the snakes will be. We have seen them, but I live in the middle of nowhere on a farm with tons of trees and farmland. A secure coop is the best defense from what I have seen though. I am running small hardware cloth and chicken netting on my pen.

I am in central Texas. Snakes are just something that will be around with chickens/ducks. You just have to keep your eyes open. But I have only seen 2 snakes on our place (I have 7 ducks) in the past month. Glad to have you on the chat...enjoy!

Howdy and WELCOME to BYC Texas forum!!

Snakes, we have snakes??

Ren2014 has stated it perfect...build a secure coop. It doesn't hurt to have a shovel, hoe, or your husband handy.

Keep us posted on your move. Be careful driving here and good luck on finding a house!

Went to let the ducks out this morning and my favorite was dead in the nesting box. Well poop, that sucks. Why does it have to my favorite? Why couldn't it be one of my loud annoying ones? I paid specially for her too and she was the easiest to pick up and sweet. I'm guessing she was egg bound. I was telling DH that I was considering cutting but a bit but now I need to watch what I say. She was a year and a half old and I got her when she was a day old. RIP Skye
