I have a couple of questions. How did you repair the bullet holes in your mantle? What breed of chickens are good for Texas heat? I'm in the DFW area. 2Nd question is for any Texan.here is my fireplace -- nice huh? Look toward the lower left right above the mantle:
Here is a zoom in jus a bit -- do you see it behind the tall turquoise thingie?
Okay you see it now right? (scream and turn green)
so how did the snake get IN, how long has it been IN and are there more? Kind of feel like I am under attack. Last night something was thudding against my house. First time thought maybe an owl flew into the house or something...but it kept up. Went out to look and couldn't find anything in the pitch dark. It kept happening and finally I found a giant Bullfrog. The biggest Bullfrog I have ever seen he must have been jumping up and getting insects? Dunno. Anyone else ever have 1. snakes in the house via an unknown method (no more leaving the doors open that's for sure0 -- and Have you ever had Bullfrogs thumping against your house at 11:00 at night?

SE of Austin, just a little off route if headed to HoustonRen, where are you at? Anywhere near Lisa (SW Houston)? My little son (2yr) sure will like to try your new swimming pool. You may laugh at my cooking (truth) but my wife sure can cook. We can leave the Pho and Egg Rolls to her, and we only take care of the beers and sodas.
Sister dear, I hope you didn't fall when running with the gun; otherwise the possum might have a big laugh. I may have to look or a link about Gun Safety for you. I sure don't recommend you to try any Olympic 100m dash or hurdles ... don't try this at home.
Anyway, my wife and baby are still in Vietnam vacationing and will be back by Sept 1. And that means I am here vacationing in US too. Life is great, isn't it ! Too bad, works is in the way everyday. I can't wait for the heat to come down so I can enjoy the weekend outdoor.
By the way, what did ya do with my baby possum? I hope you didn't run to Ren's house and enjoying some possum stew, did you?
Sorry to hear of your loss.3 of our roosters most likely died of heat stroke down here on the border. - We have a wading pool, spray them down daily and use ice blocks.. .but the heavier birds just don't do well in this heat! It's never been this hot before!!!
Our smaller birds are hanging in there and I only have 4 hens, and I get at least 2 eggs a day.
We use these and I highly recommend them. You figured that one out really quick, that kind of hole took me a little while to diagnose the cause -- I got a series of eggs before I realized that it was happening the instant they were laid when they hit hard surface.
You may want to consider getting some of those plastic pads.

There are several of types -- these are plastic and you can just rinse them off if they get soiled. I have chickens that do the same and they go crazy getting all the shavings out. Where I buy mine there are the smaller and larger wood shavings -- the smaller ones are probably softer--- and that may help. Partly, I think it is a pullet thing too.....they seem to do it very thoroughly when they first start.
I put the plastic pad on the hard wood floor of the nesting box -- and then put wood shavings piled on top of that -- Even if the hen removes All the shavings -- the plastic is still there to cushion the egg. Doesn't show but it has little plastic fibers sticking up to provide a soft landing.
OMG, I would have DIED right there. Could it have come in from the fireplace?? We have a doggie door and my fear is one day we will find a snake in the house.![]()

Got it, Del Valle. I live in Pflugerville, but raising chicken in Cedar Creek. I probably run by your pond frequently and didn't know. I will look for a sign of "(Mc) Donald Duck's little pond".SE of Austin, just a little off route if headed to Houston![]()
wouldn't they get sunburned?LOL - I wouldn't fire a gun inside for a measly snake.... But first grab I didn't get it -- and it crawled behind the picture leaning against the wall there -- so I had to take all the things off the mantle and lift up the painting so I could grab it. ugh! (wearing gloves so when it bit -- (and it did until I got it behind the head) -- it didn't hurt.![]()
Heat and chickens -- a big big concern. Good breeds - I would say Leghorns maybe, I'm always a fan of Golden Comets and I've heard that Egyptian Fayoumais are good with heat -- Heard a rumor that Martha Stewart - home-making diva had a flock of them with her other chickens - but they died of cold exposure.
Isreal has bred featherless chickens - to cope with their heat

you wouldn't need to pluck them and they would be cooler in summer -- but probably die in winter.....I saw snow up there near Dalls one winter...brrrrrr. ETA - I think that they are meat birds though because their legs are so BIG
A light breed - and a cool environment with lots of shade, lots of water and maybe even grass -- misters.... breeze and fingers crossed.
