Texas

We lost one of our lavender orpington to the cold the other day, and "storm," our other rooster is the only lavender orpington we have left, I mean those 2 were the only ones that we had to begin with. Storm is very sweet and has never pecked anyone, even our leghorn rooster will chase him around sometimes.
So sorry to hear about your loss.

Lisa,

That’s terrible! I lost a bunch to a dog and to a hawk but that’s the life of free ranging birds.

I’m down to a more manageable number these days. Sold all of the exotics and most of the rare breeds I didn’t have time for.

I’m down to about 10 breeds now, roughly 50-75 birds. I have a large free range flock that I don’t count so I’m not sure exactly.

The penned birds I know, but I check them every day. Hah!
Yep my 8 starters are freeranging the hawks keep trying but all of mine are protected by dogs and are highly alert. I pity the fool who gets mobbed by my pack. The hawks never have tried a second pass!

Howdy every body!

Just popping in to catch up. I’m quite a bit behind but I’ll catch up as I can.

Dan, Dana, Lisa, and everyone else how are you all? If you’re still here... been a few months since I have popped in.

Dan did I see you post something on my community board at the store selling your birds? I hope all is well.

Yep same here been concerned with other things for about a month, glad to see the Texas thread is lively again!

My first flock of 5 came from Dunham Farms here in Fort Worth. They are excellent show quality birds!! My second addition came from an individual, and the third from a feed store that I think uses Ideal. My latest addition you will not believe how I came to get them as I myself was just horrified...My uncle recently bought a home, when he went to go have a look after closing for the first time the previous owners had left 8 chickens and 2 cats!!! Poor things were out of water and feed, I so wish I had a forwarding address so I could send someone for them to be charged with animal cruelty! Luckily my uncle called me right away and all ended well, but since he wasn't moving in right away it could have been a catastrophy!
Wow! It sounds like you live in my neighborhood regarding the abandoned animals. People just don't understand the concept of if you can't afford the vet you can't afford the pet! So frustrating so far we have had 5 or 6 that we have vetted and sent north to IL, but dang rescuing them all sure was a drain on resources in such a major way!

Glad to see another responsible pet owner and thank you for your service!:thumbsup

Hello from Saginaw! We are just north of Fort Worth and have a mixed flock of 13. I've only been keeping chickens for just shy of 2 years now, so still kind of a newbie lol! Just wanted to get into a group of other Texans with backyard chickens.
Challenge accepted!! I out newbie you by a long shot only 5 months in personally. :bow
I'm not worthy!

Morning @AllenK@new2this,
Glad you survived the cold too! Forecast says we will get to 32°F for New Years. Not a hard freeze, but enough to kill the tomatoes for good. They are still recovering from the last cold spot. I was hopeful.

Chickens doing well and trying rehydrated alfalfa cubes. They are eating them after picking out the BOSS.

Happy New Year!

You made me check. I'm into this for 7 months now.

As predicted, the chickens are producing eggs and the marketing director failed on the customers. I'm finding homes for them. And eating more eggs than I ever have in my life.

Daughter is tickled by the hens. Fascinated by the different colored eggs. May wind up getting a couple Easter Eggers from the feed store to cycle the flock. Interested to see what the leghorns do. I'm getting 6 eggs from 8 birds after a week of 8/8. Maybe the cold snap will slow then down.
