Texas

Hi all....I am new here. I get my baby chicks today. My brooder is all set up and my coop is being built. I'm from South, South Texas. I'm a new transplant from Hawaii and other lands far and near. DH and I are retired from the Navy and decided to settle here. We have 2 acres and I decided I wanted some chickens. So excited.

Going back to the property tax proposal on the ballot. I am fortunate being a disabled vet and do not pay those. I still get a tax bill just it is all zeroed out. However I do have neighbors I like and cannot imagine adding more $$ on their shoulders as a burden, it is so wrong just to tax the poor. This is about as political as I am willing to get here on BYC.

My wife still serves to this day and she deserves any thanks people would offer me as she is the heavy lifter in the family. It has always been like that even if it was always making sure I had clean uniforms, raising our daughter or keeping the pets alive, vaccinated ect. Regardless of whatever part of the world I was in Kathrin kept the family going.

Wow the border is busy this morning. Who likes helicopters buzzing their property? Sure I know a group of mormons were killed across the border, but whoa the US is out in force today.

I'm at 50% and DH is at 90. I just filed and will have a decision the first week of DEC and crossing my fingers for 100. I'm a mess and have been retired for 12 years. This is my first appeal. I could really use the tax break as well. I can't imagine my property taxes going up anymore than they already are. Sheesh.

cross posting here:

It is the middle of the night and I have a neighbor screaming and yelling at shadows? Tonight I decided to offer him our eggs from today. He was functioning well enough to accept them but 10 minutes later he is back to screaming. Oh well I tried.

Pretty cool how the phrase "Fresh eggs" is disarming as I do live in Texas. I am also happy that he was able to return my egg collection basket. This all happened at 2AM.
Late edit:
OMG dude is now doing a kareoki or something, he really hurts my head. Regardless he is harmless I'm sure but causes psychological trauma for me. I do not like crazy neighbors as I always seem to have them it just doesn't matter where I move.

I'm thankful I don't have one of those. I do have two that think it's cool to blast their loud speaker system at 2 am so we all get to hear it. We are all on 2-5 acre parcels so there's no reason to have to hear our neighbors playing their music. Of course they are all behind gates so I can't go knock on their door and ask them to stop being jerks. A certified letter to one of them worked and we were actually able to talk on the phone....so I hope that problem is solved. We shall see.

I'm pretty sure I have about 8 of these living behind my house in the resaca. They are pretty. Way prettier than the other lumpy, bumpy looking things that I feed every day.
Wow a resaca we must be neighbors! Welcome to the Texas thread. I so hope you don't live anywhere close to where the government plans to steal your land for that silly wall and only offer you 200-300/acre like it is 1950's pricing.

I never knew what a resaca was until I moved down here and am a native retard, erm I mean Texan.

I hope you do not have one of those silly 250w lights, not like we need those here in south Texas, the MHP is better for our location. Basically that is just a heating pad wrapped around a metal bucket in my setup. Mine always gets set to low and was like 13 dollars at Walmart. I tried finding lower wattage bulbs at TSC but they do not sell them.

I did start off with the chicken cooker of death(250w light) though but learned my lesson after fighting off pasty butts daily for 6 weeks with our first batch. Once we changed over to the MHP we never have experienced that again.

If you ever get up to Bourne make sure you stop by Black Rifle Coffee company on Main. A wonderful friend of mine from Hawaii is the CINC there and that coffee will peel the enamel off your teeth!
Isn't it funny how we pronounce Texas names. I don't plan on swinging by "Burney" any time in the near future unless my parents or sisters have a medical emergency. It is just too dang far north.

I have a warming plate set at an angle for the cool nights. It's about 75 in my garage now. I just had my garage rebuilt due to a fire caused by a stain rag (3 hours after I set it down) and have no desire for that to happen again.

I am off Boca Chica not far from Central and Billy Mitchell. I'm on the Resaca de la palma. It's an older neighborhood with 2 to 5 acre parcels. If you have been here a while you probably know who I bought it from...my dentist, vet, and everyone else I've met seems to have attended bbq's or parties here. LOL. The husband passed away and his wife sold the place and moved to her home on the island.

My step son is in Dallas and had a basket ball tournament in San Antonio last weekend so we went up to watch. Just happened to be in the neighborhood so I had to check out the new store. Black Rifle Coffee Company is vet owned and operated and the store in Bourne is the first one they have opened. It's making a KILLING. ;)
